Chapter 13: The Truth Vanessa Buried
For several seconds, I couldn’t understand the words.
“I helped Marcus find Rachel.””
Vanessa’s voice came through the phone.
Quiet.
Broken.
Like she already knew there was no way back.
I stared at the wall.
Every memory I had of our marriage suddenly felt different.
The first time Vanessa met Lily.
The way she insisted she understood what it meant to become a stepmother.
The way she always said she wanted to give Lily a “complete family.””
All those moments.
All those conversations.
And now I was wondering how much of it had been real.
“Explain.””
My voice sounded nothing like my own.
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Before I met you, I knew Marcus.””
“How?””
“We dated.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
There was always something missing.
“Rachel knew him too?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He was part of her life before you.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why did Rachel warn me about him?””
“Because she found out who he really was.””
“And you helped him find her?””
“I didn’t know what he wanted.””
“That’s a lie.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I swear.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then Vanessa began.
“When Marcus and I were together, he was obsessed with proving he deserved more.””
“More from who?””
“Rachel.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Rachel’s family had money.””
I frowned.
“Marcus wanted access.””
“And you helped him?””
“I was young.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
The honesty surprised me.
She continued.
“I gave him information.””
“What information?””
“Where Rachel worked. Places she visited. People she knew.””
I felt sick.
“And then?””
“Rachel found out.””
My voice dropped.
“What happened?””
“Marcus threatened her.””
“And you?””
“I stopped talking to him.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Until he came back.””
“Yes.””
“And then you helped him again.””
“No.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t believe her.
“Daniel, listen.””
“No.””
I looked through the window.
Lily was sitting at the table drawing.
She looked peaceful.
She had no idea how many adults had failed her.
“You knew Rachel was afraid of him.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she wanted him away from Lily.””
“Yes.””
“You signed the document saying he should never have access.””
“Yes.””
“And then you gave him Rachel’s box.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“You made choices.””
She went quiet.
“I didn’t think he would come after Lily.””
“But he did.””
“Yes.””
“And you still hid it.””
“I was scared.””
I closed my eyes.
“Everyone keeps telling me they were scared.””
I looked at Lily.
“But nobody was scared for her.””
That silence hurt.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“I can fix this.””
I almost laughed.
“How?””
“I have the original documents.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The documents Marcus took.””
“Where?””
“Safe.””
“Where is safe?””
“I can’t tell you.””
I stood.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“You are not protecting yourself anymore.””
I looked at the photo of Lily and Marcus.
“You are protecting secrets.””
A long pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“I need to meet you.””
“No.””
“Daniel, please.””
“Why?””
“Because there’s something else you don’t know.””
I didn’t answer.
“Rachel didn’t just leave a warning.””
“What else?””
“She left evidence.””
“Of what?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Of what Marcus did.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What did he do?””
“He wasn’t just trying to get money.””
A pause.
“He was trying to make sure you looked like an unfit father.””
I froze.
“How?””
“He created a plan.””
“What plan?””
“He wanted Lily to say she was unhappy with you.””
My hands went cold.
“He wanted custody.””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa?””
“I helped him at first.””
Her voice broke.
“But I realized too late that he wasn’t trying to be a father.””
I stared at the phone.
“He was trying to win.””
After the call ended, I sat there for a long time.
Then I opened the folder again.
Rachel’s documents.
The warning.
The witness signature.
Vanessa.
But now I noticed something else.
A date.
The document had been signed three years after Rachel died.
That was impossible.
I picked up the phone.
Called the lawyer listed on the paper.
A woman answered.
“Carter Law Office.””
“This is Daniel Carter.””
There was a pause.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“I thought I’d never hear from you.””
My heart stopped.
“You know me?””
“I knew your wife.””
“Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Can you explain something?””
“What?””
“Why does this document have a signature dated after Rachel died?””
Silence.
Then the lawyer said:
“Because that isn’t the document Rachel left.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“The original was different.””
My hand tightened.
“Who changed it?””
Another pause.
Then:
“The last person who requested access to Rachel’s file.””
“Who?””
The answer came.
May you like
And it destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
“Vanessa Carter.””
