Chapter 11: The Box Rachel Left Behind

I couldn’t speak.

The words repeated in my head.

He’s trying to take Lily.

For years, I had worried about ordinary things.

School.

Bills.

Work.

Whether I was spending enough time with my daughter.

I never imagined someone was planning to remove her from my life.

“Why would Marcus want Lily?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I said I don’t know!””

Her voice cracked.

I heard her breathing.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Marcus believes Rachel left something behind.””

“What?””

“A letter.””

I froze.

“A letter from Rachel?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“In the box.””

I remembered that box.

A small wooden box Rachel kept in the closet.

After she died, I couldn’t open it.

Not for months.

Eventually, I put it away.

I thought grief was easier when some things stayed untouched.

“Why does Marcus have it?””

“Because I gave it to him.””

Everything stopped.

“You did what?””

“I didn’t know what it was.””

“You opened Rachel’s box?””

“I was looking for financial information.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus said he needed proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That he had rights.””

My voice became quiet.

“Rights to Lily?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I ended the call.

Not because I was finished.

Because I couldn’t listen anymore.

I walked inside.

My mother immediately looked up.

“What happened?””

I sat down.

“Marcus wants custody of Lily.””

My mother went pale.

“What?””

I explained everything.

The money.

The documents.

Rachel’s box.

When I finished, my mother was silent.

Then she said:

“Daniel, there’s something you need to know.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Rachel called me before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She asked me to keep something safe.””

“What?””

My mother walked to her bedroom.

When she returned, she held a small envelope.

My hands shook before I even touched it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Rachel told me not to unless you needed it.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Needed it?””

My mother nodded.

“She said one day someone might try to rewrite the truth.””

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Rachel’s handwriting.

The sight alone nearly broke me.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, something happened that made you question everything.

My hands trembled.

I kept reading.

I need you to know that I trust you with Lily more than anyone.

I stopped.

My eyes blurred.

Mom touched my shoulder.

“Keep going.””

The letter continued.

There is someone from my past who may try to claim a place in Lily’s life. Do not believe everything he says.

My breathing became uneven.

Someone from her past.

Marcus.

Rachel had known.

But how?

I continued.

He will say he changed. He will say he deserves another chance. But people who disappear when things become difficult do not become fathers because they suddenly want something.

I looked up.

“Marcus.””

My mother nodded.

The final paragraph made my entire body go cold.

Daniel, if Marcus Reed ever appears again, protect Lily. Not because he is her biological father. Because I know what he is capable of.

I lowered the letter.

My mother whispered:

“She knew.””

I looked at the date.

Two weeks before Rachel died.

She knew Marcus might come back.

But there was one thing I didn’t understand.

“How did Vanessa find this?””

My mother looked confused.

“I thought you had it.””

“I didn’t.””

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A photo.

My heart stopped.

It was Lily.

Standing beside Marcus.

The picture had been taken today.

May you like

Underneath was one sentence.

I already met my daughter.
