Chapter 14: The Daughter Who Finally Spoke
I didn’t confront Vanessa immediately.
Not because I forgave her.
Because I needed the truth.
The next morning, I met with Rachel’s attorney.
Her name was Laura Bennett.
She placed a folder on the table.
“I should have contacted you years ago.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because Vanessa convinced me she was handling everything.””
My jaw tightened.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
Laura opened the folder.
“The original document was written by Rachel six weeks before she passed away.””
I looked down.
There was Rachel’s handwriting.
Real handwriting.
Not copied.
Not changed.
“What did it say?””
Laura looked at me.
“Rachel wanted you to have full custody of Lily.””
I exhaled.
I already knew that.
But hearing it officially still hurt.
“And Marcus?””
“He was specifically named as someone Rachel did not trust.””
“Why?””
Laura hesitated.
“Because Rachel believed he was manipulating people around her.””
I looked at the papers.
“Why would Vanessa change it?””
Laura pushed another document forward.
A request form.
My eyes moved down.
Vanessa’s name.
“She asked for copies after Rachel died.””
“Why?””
“She claimed she needed them for family records.””
“And then?””
“She requested modifications.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She changed Rachel’s final wishes.””
“Yes.””
I left the office with copies of everything.
But I still needed one answer.
Why?
That evening, Vanessa came to my mother’s house.
She looked exhausted.
No makeup.
No perfect appearance.
Just someone who knew everything had fallen apart.
“I know you talked to Laura.””
I didn’t invite her in.
“You changed Rachel’s document.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because Marcus made me.””
“Again.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I need the truth without excuses.””
She nodded.
“I was afraid.””
“Of him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why stay connected?””
“Because he threatened me.””
“With what?””
She looked toward the house.
At Lily’s room.
Then whispered:
“He had proof that I helped him years ago.””
I stared at her.
“He was blackmailing you.””
“Yes.””
“And the money?””
“He demanded it.””
“Why?””
“He said he needed resources to fight for Lily.””
I laughed.
“He used you.””
“Yes.””
“And you let him.””
Her tears fell.
“Yes.””
The answer was painful because it was honest.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
Sorry wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
Then the front door opened.
Lily walked outside.
She saw Vanessa.
And stopped.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Lily asked:
“Why are you here?””
Vanessa looked destroyed.
“Lily…”
“No.””
My daughter’s voice was quiet.
But strong.
“I want to ask something.””
Vanessa nodded.
“What?””
“Did you really not want me?””
The question broke everyone.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.””
“Then why did you make me feel like I was bad?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was wrong.””
“You said my shoes were too expensive.””
“I know.””
“You bought Ava and Madison everything.””
“I know.””
“You said Dad would be angry if I asked for things.””
“I know.””
Lily wiped her eyes.
“Why?””
Vanessa couldn’t answer.
Because there was no answer a child should have to hear.
Finally she whispered:
“Because I was selfish.””
Lily looked down.
Then she said:
“I just wanted you to love me.””
Vanessa broke.
She fell to her knees.
“I’m sorry.””
Lily didn’t move.
She didn’t forgive her.
Not yet.
And she didn’t have to.
Then my phone rang.
Laura.
I answered.
“Daniel.””
“What happened?””
“We found something else.””
“What?””
“Marcus filed a custody petition this morning.””
My stomach dropped.
“He did?””
“Yes.””
“What evidence did he submit?””
A pause.
Then Laura said:
“Documents claiming you neglected Lily.””
I looked at Lily.
Then at Vanessa.
“How?””
Laura’s voice became serious.
“Because someone provided school records, financial records, and statements.””
My blood ran cold.
“From who?””
Another pause.
“Your wife.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She went pale.
“No.””
Laura continued:
“Daniel, there is one more problem.””
“What?””
“Marcus isn’t just asking for custody.””
May you like
The silence was unbearable.
“He’s asking the court to remove you immediately.””
