Chapter 9: Before Maya Was Born

The message stayed on my screen.

Ask your wife what happened before Maya was born.

A normal person might ignore it.

A normal person might assume it was another attempt to confuse me.

But nothing about this night was normal.

Not anymore.

I looked at Claire.

“What happened before Maya was born?””

Her face changed instantly.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not this time.””

She looked at Maya.

“Maya shouldn’t hear this.””

My daughter looked between us.

“Daddy?””

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, I need to talk to Mommy for a minute.””

She nodded.

But she grabbed my hand before letting go.

“Don’t leave.””

The words hurt.

Because they echoed everything she had been afraid of.

“I’m not going anywhere.””

I walked into the hallway with Claire.

“What happened?””

She leaned against the wall.

“I didn’t tell you because I thought it was over.””

“What was over?””

She closed her eyes.

“Before Maya was born, I had a sister.””

I blinked.

A sister?

“Claire…”

“I know.””

She looked ashamed.

“I never talk about her.””

“Why?””

Her voice became quieter.

“Because she died.””

The anger inside me paused.

Not disappeared.

Paused.

“How?””

Claire looked down.

“She had mental health problems.””

The phrase felt familiar.

Too familiar.

“Problems?””

“She struggled with anxiety. Depression. She was in and out of treatment.””

I waited.

Claire wiped her cheek.

“Evan was one of her doctors.””

My entire body went still.

No.

“You knew him before?””

She nodded.

“He treated my sister.””

“What was her name?””

“Emily.””

I looked toward Maya’s room.

Then back at Claire.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t want Maya connected to that part of my life.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Claire took a shaky breath.

“After Emily died, Evan contacted me.””

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to help families like mine.””

I stared at her.

“And you trusted him.””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

Then she broke.

“I trusted him because he knew my pain.””

I said nothing.

Because I understood.

Not the choice.

But the vulnerability.

The way people can be manipulated by someone who knows exactly where they are weakest.

“What happened to Emily?””

Claire’s eyes filled.

“She died after a treatment program.””

“What kind of treatment?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

My stomach tightened.

“You don’t know?””

“I was young. I was grieving. Evan told my parents it was unavoidable.””

“And you believed him?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Until Maya.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

Claire whispered:

“Because Maya started saying the same things Emily said.””

“What things?””

“That she felt like people were trying to make her doubt herself.””

I looked back at Maya.

My daughter.

Eight years old.

Carrying the same fear as a woman who never got the chance to tell her story.

Before I could respond, Nurse Nia walked toward us.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

“What?””

“The doctor reviewed Maya’s tests.””

“And?””

She hesitated.

“There’s something unusual.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“Maya’s symptoms don’t match a simple stomach issue.””

Claire stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Nia looked between us.

“It means someone needs to explain exactly what she was given.””

I looked at Claire.

Then at the closed hospital room door.

“Can we test the supplement?””

“We already did.””

“And?””

Nia’s expression was serious.

“It wasn’t a children’s vitamin.””

The hallway went silent.

“What was it?””

She lowered her voice.

“A medication used in certain psychiatric treatments.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“No.””

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

She shook her head violently.

“No.””

But then her phone rang.

Again.

She looked at the screen.

And this time, I saw the name.

*Emily’s Father.*

Claire answered.

She barely spoke.

Just listened.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“No. That’s impossible.””

She hung up.

I stepped closer.

“Who was that?””

Claire looked at me.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Emily’s father.””

“What did he say?””

She looked toward Maya’s room.

“He said…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He found the original files from Evan’s treatment program.””

I waited.

“And?””

Claire’s hand trembled.

“He said Maya isn’t his first child.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked at me.

May you like

And whispered the words that changed everything.

“It means Evan Cole has been doing this for years.””
