Chapter 11: The Lie Claire Believed
I couldn’t move.
The document sat between us.
Claire’s signature.
A date from years earlier.
Before Maya was born.
Before our marriage.
Before I knew anything about Evan Cole.
“What did he do to her?””
Robert looked down.
“He convinced her she was helping Emily.””
I flipped through the papers.
“Explain.””
“When Emily got worse, Claire was desperate.””
“She was her sister.””
“Yes.””
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“She wanted to save her.””
The word stayed with me.
Save.
The same word Claire had used about Maya.
Robert continued.
“Evan told Claire that Emily needed people around her who understood her condition.””
“And?””
“He asked Claire to participate in evaluations.””
I looked at the document.
“What kind of evaluations?””
Robert’s expression darkened.
“Emotional responses.””
My stomach tightened.
“Like what?””
“He would ask questions. Show situations. Record reactions.””
“On Emily?””
“At first.””
I looked at him.
“At first?””
Robert nodded.
“Then he started including Claire.””
I felt sick.
“He studied the family.””
“Yes.””
The room went quiet.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“Why?””
Robert looked at me.
“Because families reveal weaknesses.””
I closed the folder.
“No.””
Robert looked surprised.
“No?””
“I don’t want to hear that my wife was manipulated.””
He watched me carefully.
“I understand.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I mean I don’t want to believe it.””
Robert nodded.
“That’s what Evan counts on.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He doesn’t pick people who don’t care.””
The words hit harder than expected.
“He picks people who care too much.””
I sat back.
Claire.
Emily.
Maya.
A pattern.
A horrible pattern.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
*Maya is asking for you. Please come back.*
I stood.
Robert grabbed the folder.
“Take it.””
I hesitated.
“Why?””
“Because if Evan finds out you have this, he’ll try to take it.””
I picked it up.
“Why are you helping me?””
Robert looked away.
“Because I failed my daughter.””
The sadness in his voice stopped me.
“I believed him.””
He swallowed.
“I defended him.””
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“And I lost years trying to forgive myself.””
I left.
When I returned to the hospital, Maya was sleeping.
Claire sat beside her.
She looked exhausted.
“You found him?””
I nodded.
“I found Robert.””
Her face changed.
“Robert?””
“Emily’s father.””
Claire looked away.
“You know.””
“Yes.””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“I was stupid.””
I sat down.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t have to defend me.””
“I’m not.””
I placed the folder on the table.
“You were manipulated.””
She looked at the folder.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
Her hands started shaking.
“What proof?””
“That Evan has done this before.””
Claire covered her mouth.
“No.””
I watched her.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“What exactly did you sign?””
She didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled.
“I don’t know.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
She whispered.
“I thought I was signing permission for Emily’s care.””
My voice lowered.
“You don’t know what you signed?””
She shook her head.
“He said it was routine.””
The same sentence.
The same trick.
I opened the folder.
There were dozens of documents.
One stood out.
A consent form.
A program agreement.
And a list of participants.
I read the names.
My eyes stopped.
Because there were more children.
More families.
More signatures.
Then I saw the newest entry.
The newest patient.
*Maya Bennett.*
I looked at Claire.
“He planned this.””
She stared at the page.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“He chose Maya.””
Her breathing became uneven.
“No.””
I held up the document.
“Why?””
Claire’s eyes moved across the page.
Then she whispered:
“Because of Emily.””
I froze.
“What does Maya have to do with Emily?””
Claire looked at me.
And the answer terrified me.
“Because Evan always believed trauma could be passed down.””
I stared.
“That makes no sense.””
“He thought children inherited emotional weaknesses from their parents.””
My stomach turned.
“He was testing Maya.””
Claire nodded.
“But not just Maya.””
“Then who?””
She looked at me.
“Us.””
Before I could respond, alarms sounded from the hallway.
A nurse rushed past.
Then another.
I stood immediately.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
I ran toward Maya’s room.
The door was open.
The bed was empty.
My heart stopped.
A nurse turned toward me.
“Mr. Bennett…”
“Where is my daughter?””
Her face went pale.
“She was taken for another evaluation.””
“By who?””
The nurse looked at the clipboard in her hand.
May you like
Then slowly looked up.
“Dr. Cole.””
