Chapter 14: The Final Evaluation
I stared at my name until the letters blurred.
Final evaluation subject.
Not patient.
Not father.
Subject.
I felt sick.
“He was studying me.””
Claire looked over my shoulder.
“Oh my God.””
I turned the page.
There were notes.
Observations.
Descriptions of my behavior.
My reactions.
My conversations with Maya.
Evan had been documenting our family.
For months.
Maybe years.
“How did he get this?””
Claire looked terrified.
“Maybe through me.””
I looked at her.
She shook her head quickly.
“No. Not intentionally.””
I believed her.
Because now I understood something.
Evan didn’t break into people’s lives.
He was invited in.
That was his weapon.
Trust.
My phone rang.
Officer Daniels.
I answered.
“Hello?””
“Marcus, we need you to come back to the station.””
“Why?””
“We found something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“Something connected to Daniel Brooks.””
I looked at Claire.
“Where?””
The officer gave me the address.
An old records building.
Twenty minutes later, we arrived.
The building was almost empty.
Dust covered the shelves.
A place where forgotten things went to disappear.
Officer Daniels met us inside.
“I think you need to see this.””
He led us to a file room.
On a table was a box.
“Where did this come from?””
“Storage.””
He opened it.
Inside were old documents.
Photos.
Medical records.
And a journal.
“Whose is that?””
Daniels looked at Claire.
“Daniel Brooks.””
She covered her mouth.
I opened the journal carefully.
The first pages were normal.
Thoughts.
Feelings.
Struggles.
Then I found a name.
Evan.
The entries changed.
*Evan says my fear is proof that I need him.*
I turned the page.
*He says my family doesn’t understand me.*
Another page.
*He says if I leave, everyone will abandon me.*
My hands shook.
The exact same words.
The same method.
The same manipulation.
Then the final entry.
The handwriting was uneven.
*I think Evan is making us afraid of each other.*
I stopped.
The next line was underlined.
*If anything happens to me, do not let him near my child.*
I closed the journal.
Claire was crying.
“He knew.””
I looked at her.
“Daniel knew.””
She nodded.
“He tried to warn someone.””
“But nobody listened.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Just like Emily.””
The pieces finally connected.
Evan wasn’t treating broken families.
He was creating them.
Officer Daniels took the journal.
“We need to reopen everything.””
“What about Maya?””
“We’ll make sure she’s protected.””
I nodded.
But something still bothered me.
“How did Evan get access to all these records?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire looked at me.
“Lauren.””
I froze.
The school counselor.
She had access.
She connected families.
She introduced parents.
“She wasn’t helping him.””
Claire whispered.
“She was part of it.””
We returned to the hospital.
But something was wrong immediately.
Nurse Nia ran toward us.
“Marcus.””
“What happened?””
Her face was pale.
“Lauren was here.””
My stomach dropped.
“Where is she?””
“She left.””
“With who?””
Nia hesitated.
Then said:
“With Maya.””
The world stopped.
“What?””
“She showed paperwork.””
“What paperwork?””
“A temporary transfer authorization.””
I felt cold.
“She took my daughter?””
Nia nodded.
“And Marcus…”
“What?””
“She wasn’t alone.””
My voice shook.
“Who was with her?””
Nia looked terrified.
“Dr. Cole.””
I ran.
I didn’t think.
I didn’t breathe.
I just ran.
Because after everything I had learned…
after every lie…
after every secret…
there was one truth left.
Evan Cole wanted Maya.
May you like
And this time…
I wasn’t going to let him take her.
