Chapter 12: The Test
I didn’t remember running.
I only remember the sound of my shoes hitting the hospital floor.
Every second felt impossible.
Maya was gone.
Not kidnapped.
Not taken by a stranger.
Taken by someone with permission.
Someone who knew exactly how the system worked.
“Where did he take her?”” I demanded.
The nurse checked the hallway.
“Room 312.””
I moved immediately.
Claire followed.
“Marcus, wait.””
I turned.
“No.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know you’re angry.””
“Angry?””
My voice broke.
“He took her.””
“I know.””
“No, Claire.””
I stepped closer.
“He took her because we gave him access.””
She flinched.
And I hated that part of me wanted her to feel the pain I felt.
But Maya was all that mattered.
We reached Room 312.
The door was locked.
I knocked hard.
“Maya!””
No answer.
“Open this door!””
A few seconds passed.
Then Dr. Cole’s voice came from inside.
“Mr. Bennett.””
My blood went cold.
“Open the door.””
“I’m conducting an assessment.””
“You do not have permission.””
A pause.
Then:
“Actually, I do.””
The door opened slightly.
Dr. Cole stood there.
Calm.
Controlled.
Like this was a normal appointment.
Behind him, Maya sat in a chair.
She looked terrified.
I saw her.
And everything inside me broke.
“Daddy.””
I pushed past him.
“I’m here.””
I knelt beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
But her eyes said no.
Dr. Cole watched.
“This is exactly what I’m talking about.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“Your emotional response.””
I stared at him.
“My daughter is scared.””
“And you are reinforcing that fear.””
I couldn’t believe him.
“You brought her into a room alone.””
“She agreed.””
I looked at Maya.
“Did you?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Dr. Cole sighed.
“This is unfortunate.””
“No.””
I stood.
“This is over.””
He smiled slightly.
“You still don’t understand.””
I hated that smile.
“What don’t I understand?””
“That Maya is not the problem.””
He glanced at Claire.
“Neither is Claire.””
Then he looked at me.
“You are.””
The room went silent.
I almost laughed.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
He stepped closer.
“You create instability.””
“By protecting my daughter?””
“By refusing to accept reality.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Dr. Cole looked at her.
“You know I’m right.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“But I know what you do now.””
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
“You’ve been talking to Marcus.””
“Yes.””
“That was a mistake.””
Claire looked at Maya.
“No.””
She took a breath.
“The mistake was trusting you.””
A long silence.
Then Dr. Cole smiled.
“You think you’re free because you discovered the truth.””
He looked at me.
“But you still don’t know the entire story.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Then he reached for a folder.
“I think Maya should.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He placed the folder on the table.
Inside was a photograph.
A photo of Maya.
Not recently.
Years ago.
A baby.
I looked at Claire.
She looked confused.
Then Dr. Cole spoke.
“Your daughter was never my first connection to this family.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
He pointed to the photo.
“Ask your wife who Maya’s biological father is.””
The room went silent.
Claire’s face turned white.
“Evan…”
But he continued.
“The truth is why Maya was chosen.””
I looked at my wife.
“Maya’s biological father?””
Claire’s lips trembled.
I had known her for twelve years.
I had loved her.
I had trusted her.
But in that moment…
she looked like a stranger.
Then Maya whispered something.
Something so quiet I almost missed it.
“Daddy…”
I turned toward her.
“Mommy said I could never tell you.””
My heart stopped.
“Tell me what?””
Maya looked at Claire.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“You’re not my real dad.””
