Chapter 7: The Court Order
The moment I saw the paper in Dr. Evan Cole’s hand, I knew the situation had changed.
This was no longer about a hospital visit.
It was no longer about a disagreement between two parents.
This was a battle.
And my daughter was standing in the middle of it.
I stepped away from Maya’s bed and moved toward the hallway.
“Mr. Bennett,” Dr. Cole said.
His voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
That made me trust him even less.
“What is that?””
He lifted the document slightly.
“A temporary emergency order.””
I stared at him.
“Emergency order for what?””
His eyes moved briefly toward Maya’s room.
“For protecting a child from a potentially unstable environment.””
The words hit me like a slap.
Unstable environment.
He wasn’t talking about a medical condition.
He was talking about me.
“You’re trying to take my daughter?””
“I’m trying to make sure she receives appropriate care.””
I laughed once.
A cold, empty sound.
“Appropriate care?””
I stepped closer.
“You mean the care where she’s told her own memories aren’t real?””
Dr. Cole’s expression changed for half a second.
Only half a second.
But I saw it.
Recognition.
He knew about the recording.
“You’ve been listening to private conversations.””
“My daughter recorded conversations because she was scared.””
“She was coached.””
I froze.
“What?””
He looked past me toward Maya’s room.
“Children can be influenced.””
“By who?””
His silence answered.
He thought it was me.
That was when I understood.
This was his strategy.
Not just controlling Maya.
Controlling the story.
Making anyone who questioned him look dangerous.
Claire rushed into the hallway.
“Evan, stop.””
He looked at her.
“You should have listened to me.””
Her face went pale.
“Leave her alone.””
I turned toward Claire.
For the first time, she wasn’t defending him.
She was afraid of him.
“Claire,” I said quietly.
She looked at me.
“I need you to tell me everything.””
Her eyes filled.
“I will.””
Dr. Cole stepped between us.
“Mrs. Bennett, I would be very careful.””
Claire looked at him.
“You threatened me.””
The hallway went silent.
I looked at her.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“When I said I wanted to stop the sessions…”
Her voice shook.
“He told me if I withdrew Maya, he would report me.””
“To who?””
“To child services.””
I stared.
“You were afraid he would accuse you?””
She nodded.
“He said no one would believe a mother who secretly signed treatment papers and then changed her mind.””
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
Because suddenly I understood something.
Claire wasn’t innocent.
But she wasn’t the person pulling the strings either.
Dr. Cole looked irritated.
“This is becoming emotional.””
“No,” I said.
“This is becoming clear.””
He turned toward me.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“You’re right.””
I pointed toward Maya’s room.
“But I know exactly who I’m dealing with.””
A father.
A daughter.
And someone who thought fear was the same thing as control.
The hospital administrator arrived with security.
Everyone became quieter.
The court order was reviewed.
Then the administrator looked at Dr. Cole.
“This document requires verification.””
“It’s valid.””
“It still requires verification.””
For the first time, his confidence slipped.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Security asked everyone to step aside while they contacted the court.
Dr. Cole walked away.
Claire remained.
We stood there together.
The strangest thing was that I didn’t know what to say to my wife.
The woman who hid things from me.
The woman who lied.
The woman who might have also been trapped.
Finally, I asked:
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire looked down.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I was wrong.””
I wanted to stay angry.
I needed to.
But then I remembered the letter.
The warning.
The fear in her voice.
“What happened at his office?””
Claire looked toward Maya.
Then whispered:
“The first time Maya told me something was wrong, I thought she was having a nightmare.””
“What did she say?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“She said Dr. Cole showed her pictures.””
My stomach turned.
“What kind of pictures?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She wouldn’t tell me.””
Claire looked terrified.
“She just kept saying one thing.””
“What?””
Claire’s voice dropped.
“She said, ‘Daddy can’t know because he’ll disappear.’”
I felt cold.
“Why would she think that?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because Evan told her you would leave if you knew the truth.””
The hallway blurred.
Someone had been poisoning my daughter’s trust.
Not just in me.
In everyone.
Before I could respond, Nurse Nia rushed out of Maya’s room.
Her face was serious.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
She looked at Claire.
Then back at me.
“Maya woke up screaming.””
My heart stopped.
“What did she say?””
Nia hesitated.
May you like
Then answered.
“She said Dr. Cole wasn’t the only person who was there that night.””
