Chapter 9: The Box of Hidden Memories
I returned to my house before going after Vanessa.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed answers.
Mason stayed on the phone with me while I searched.
The house felt different now.
Every room looked like a place where a secret had been hidden.
The kitchen where Lily cried.
The dining room where Vanessa slapped her.
The hallway where I walked past signs I never noticed.
I went upstairs.
"Where did you find the box?"" I asked.
Mason answered quietly.
"Behind the old cabinet in Mom's closet.""
I opened the closet.
Moved clothes.
Moved shoes.
Nothing.
Then I noticed the cabinet.
It was heavier than it should have been.
I pulled.
Behind it was a small wooden box.
My heart sank.
"Mason.""
"I know.""
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
All of Lily.
At different ages.
Some I had never seen.
I picked up one.
Lily was three years old.
She was sitting on a playground.
I wasn't there.
Another.
Lily was at preschool.
Another.
Lily was crying.
My hands started shaking.
"Why would she keep these?""
Mason was quiet.
Then:
"Look closer.""
I looked at the pictures.
On the back were dates.
Locations.
Notes.
My stomach turned.
They weren't memories.
They were records.
Tracking.
I picked up another.
The note said:
*First day without Michael. She cried for two hours.*
Another:
*She still asks about her mother.*
Another:
*Need to make sure Emily never finds her.*
I dropped the photograph.
My phone nearly slipped from my hand.
"Michael?""
I couldn't answer.
The woman I married wasn't just hiding things.
She was documenting them.
Like Lily was an object.
Not a child.
I searched deeper.
At the bottom of the box was a letter.
The envelope was old.
The name written on it made my chest tighten.
*For Michael.*
I opened it.
The handwriting wasn't Vanessa's.
It was Emily's.
My heart raced.
The letter began:
If you are reading this, then Vanessa failed to keep the truth hidden.
I sat on the floor.
Mason stayed silent.
I kept reading.
Michael, you don't know me, but I know you. Vanessa told me about you before she married you.
I froze.
Before she married me?
The letter continued.
She told me you were kind. Responsible. The kind of man who would protect a child even if she wasn't yours.
My hands trembled.
That is why she chose you.
I closed my eyes.
All this time.
I thought our marriage was love.
But maybe I was just useful.
The letter continued.
Vanessa never wanted a husband. She wanted someone who could give her access to Lily.
I couldn't breathe.
Then the final paragraph.
There is something else you need to know. Lily's birth certificate was changed.
I stopped.
Changed?
I read the sentence again.
If Vanessa tells you Lily was never yours to begin with, she is lying. Lily has always had a father.
My heart raced.
A father?
I looked at the letter.
Then the box.
Then the phone.
"Mason.""
"Yeah?""
"Did Vanessa ever tell you who Lily's biological father was?""
Silence.
Then:
"No.""
I stood up.
"Why?""
"Because whenever I asked about Lily's dad...""
His voice lowered.
"She said he was dead.""
The room became ice cold.
Another lie.
Another missing piece.
Then my phone received a new message.
From Vanessa.
No words.
Just a picture.
A man standing beside her.
A man I recognized.
The same man who called me earlier.
Her first husband.
May you like
But the caption underneath made my blood freeze.
*Ask him why he helped me hide Lily's father.*
