Chapter 5: The Truth Buried in Lily's Past
The coffee shop was nearly empty when I arrived.
I almost didn't go.
Every part of me told me it was a trap.
But there was one thing I couldn't ignore.
Lily.
If Vanessa knew something about my daughter's past, I needed answers.
I sat in the corner booth, watching the door.
Five minutes later, Vanessa walked in.
She looked different.
No anger.
No cold expression.
Just exhaustion.
She sat across from me.
"Thank you for coming.""
I didn't respond.
She looked at my face.
"You really hate me right now.""
"I don't know what I feel.""
That seemed to hurt her.
Good.
She looked down at her hands.
"I know what I did was wrong.""
I laughed quietly.
"Wrong?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I lost control.""
"You slapped a five-year-old child.""
"I know.""
"You denied her food.""
"I know.""
"You lied to me.""
Her face fell.
"Yes.""
I leaned forward.
"So tell me the truth.""
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then:
"Lily's mother didn't die the way I told you.""
My entire body went still.
"What?""
Vanessa looked around the coffee shop.
"She wasn't just sick.""
I stared at her.
"Then what happened?""
"She left.""
The words felt impossible.
"No.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"She left Lily behind.""
I shook my head.
"That's not what you told me.""
"I know.""
My voice hardened.
"Why would you lie?""
"Because I wanted you to stay.""
The honesty of that answer was almost worse.
"You knew I loved Lily.""
"Yes.""
"And you used that.""
Vanessa looked away.
"I knew you would never abandon a child.""
My chest tightened.
"Because I wouldn't.""
"I know.""
She wiped her eyes.
"But I was desperate.""
"Desperate enough to pretend her mother was dead?""
She didn't answer.
The silence was enough.
I stood up.
"I'm done.""
"Wait.""
I stopped.
"There is more.""
I turned around.
Vanessa reached into her purse.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I found this years ago.""
I didn't take it.
"What is it?""
"A letter.""
"From who?""
"Lily's mother.""
My heart started pounding.
"Why do you have it?""
"Because she sent it to me.""
I stared at her.
"Why would she send you anything?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Because she wanted Lily back.""
The world seemed to shift.
"You said she abandoned her.""
"I know.""
"Then why?""
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
"Because I made sure she couldn't come back.""
I felt sick.
"What did you do?""
She closed her eyes.
"I told her Lily was better off without her.""
My hands curled into fists.
"You stole a child from her mother.""
"I raised her!""
"You controlled her.""
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something underneath her fear.
Not guilt.
Possession.
"I loved Lily.""
"No," I said.
"You wanted Lily.""
She looked away.
The distinction clearly hurt because she knew it was true.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Mason.
*Dad, come home now. I found something.*
I looked at Vanessa.
"What did you do?""
Her face changed.
"What?""
"Mason found something.""
She stood quickly.
"Michael, you need to understand something.""
"What?""
"If Mason found that file...""
She stopped.
"That file?""
My eyes narrowed.
"What file?""
Vanessa froze.
She had just revealed something she didn't mean to.
I stepped closer.
"What file, Vanessa?""
She grabbed her purse.
"Go home.""
"Tell me.""
"Go home!""
The fear in her voice was real.
Not fake.
Something had scared her.
I walked out of the coffee shop.
As I drove home, I called Mason.
He didn't answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
When I reached the house, the front door was open.
My heart dropped.
"Mason?""
No response.
I rushed inside.
The living room was empty.
The notebook was gone.
Then I saw something on the floor.
A torn piece of paper.
I picked it up.
It was a photograph.
A young woman holding baby Lily.
On the back, someone had written:
*If anything happens to me, don't let Vanessa raise her.*
And beneath that sentence was a name.
May you like
A name I had never seen before.
The name of Lily's real mother.
