Chapter 13: The Night Lily Remembered
The words echoed in my head.
*The night Mommy disappeared.*
I looked at Emily.
Then Daniel.
Neither of them spoke.
They didn't have to.
Their faces told me they knew exactly what my sister meant.
"What happened that night?"" I asked.
Emily looked down.
"Michael...""
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"I am done with half-truths.""
Daniel stood slowly.
"He's right.""
Emily closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked like someone who had been carrying a heavy secret for too long.
"The night I disappeared," she whispered, "was the night I tried to take Lily back.""
I stared at her.
"From Vanessa?""
She nodded.
"After years of fighting, I finally had proof. I had records. Witnesses. Everything.""
"Then what happened?""
Emily's hands trembled.
"Vanessa found out.""
The room went silent.
"She came to my house.""
Daniel looked away.
"I was supposed to be there.""
"But you weren't.""
He shook his head.
"I was delayed.""
Emily continued.
"When Vanessa arrived, Lily was asleep upstairs.""
My chest tightened.
"My daughter was there?""
"Yes.""
Emily swallowed.
"Vanessa wasn't angry. That was the frightening part.""
"What was she like?""
Emily looked at me.
"Calm.""
The same thing Mason had said.
Calm.
Not panic.
Not fear.
Control.
"She told me I would never take Lily away.""
I felt my hands curl into fists.
"What did you do?""
"I called the police.""
"Then?""
"Vanessa left.""
I frowned.
"That's it?""
"No.""
Emily's voice became quieter.
"An hour later, my car was found abandoned.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Everyone assumed I left.""
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
She looked at me.
"I was attacked.""
The room went silent.
Daniel stepped forward.
"I found her.""
I looked at him.
"Where?""
"Two days later.""
My stomach twisted.
"Two days?""
"I was searching everywhere.""
Daniel's voice cracked.
"When I found her, she was injured and terrified.""
Emily nodded.
"Vanessa didn't want me dead.""
"Then what did she want?""
Emily looked toward the window.
"She wanted me to disappear.""
A chill moved through me.
"Why?""
"Because a dead mother creates questions.""
She looked at me.
"But a mother who runs away creates blame.""
I felt sick.
Vanessa hadn't just lied.
She had rewritten reality.
She made Emily look like the villain.
She made me believe she abandoned Lily.
She made Lily grow up thinking she wasn't wanted.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Mason.
*Dad, I found Lily's location.*
I answered immediately.
"Where is she?""
His reply came seconds later.
*The old house. Vanessa's hidden house.*
My heart dropped.
"How do you know?""
Another message.
*Because I tracked the phone she took from the kitchen.*
I looked up.
"She's there.""
Emily stood.
"I'll come with you.""
I hesitated.
"You don't know what Vanessa might do.""
Emily looked at me.
"Neither do you.""
She was right.
And that scared me.
The drive felt endless.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel sat beside me.
Emily sat in the back.
A family that should have existed years ago.
A family destroyed by secrets.
When we arrived, the house was dark.
Too dark.
I stepped out.
"Mason?""
"I'm outside," he answered.
I looked around.
My stepson emerged from behind a tree.
"What are you doing here?""
"I told you I wasn't staying behind.""
I wanted to be angry.
But I couldn't.
He had saved Lily.
He had saved me.
"Stay close.""
We approached the door.
It was unlocked.
Inside, the house was silent.
Then we heard something.
A child's voice.
"Daddy?""
My heart stopped.
"Lily!""
I ran upstairs.
She was sitting on a bed.
Holding her rabbit.
Vanessa stood beside the window.
"Lily!""
My daughter jumped up.
"Daddy!""
She ran into my arms.
I held her so tightly she laughed through tears.
"I knew you would find me.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"What did you do?""
She looked broken.
Not angry.
Broken.
"I just wanted one more night.""
"One more night?""
"With her.""
I shook my head.
"You took my daughter.""
Vanessa whispered:
"Because I knew if you found the truth, you would never let me see her again.""
The police sirens sounded outside.
Her eyes filled.
Then she said:
"I wasn't the only one who lied.""
I looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
She stared at Emily.
"Ask her why she really left Lily.""
May you like
Emily went still.
And I realized this story still had one secret left.
