My Daughter's Empty Lunchbox / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Evidence Vanessa Tried to Hide

I stared at the photograph until the words blurred.

Lily's real mother.

A woman I believed was gone.

A woman whose name Vanessa had kept hidden for years.

I flipped the picture over again.

The handwriting was shaky.

Desperate.

Like someone knew they didn't have much time.

*If anything happens to me, don't let Vanessa raise her.*

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

"No...""

A sound came from upstairs.

I looked up.

"Mason?""

No answer.

I ran toward the stairs.

The house felt different.

Too quiet.

Every step creaked beneath my feet.

"Mason!""

This time I heard something.

A drawer closing.

I rushed into my office.

Mason stood beside my desk holding a folder.

His face was pale.

"You found it.""

I stopped.

"What happened?""

He looked at the folder.

"I was looking for the notebook.""

"Where's Vanessa?""

He didn't answer.

"Mason.""

"She came back.""

My heart sank.

"When?""

"Right after you left.""

I clenched my jaw.

"What did she do?""

Mason swallowed.

"She wasn't angry.""

That worried me more.

"What do you mean?""

"She was scared.""

I walked closer.

"What did she say?""

Mason opened the folder.

"She said if you found this, everything would fall apart.""

I looked inside.

Documents.

Old records.

Letters.

I picked up the first page.

It was a custody agreement.

But the names made me freeze.

Vanessa.

And another woman.

Lily's mother.

"This is impossible.""

Mason looked at me.

"What?""

"Vanessa had legal custody.""

"No, Dad.""

He pointed lower on the page.

I read the line carefully.

Temporary guardianship.

Not adoption.

Not permanent custody.

Temporary.

My breathing changed.

"She lied.""

Mason nodded.

"She lied about everything.""

I turned the pages.

There were more documents.

Letters Vanessa never sent.

Emails.

Messages.

And then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A hospital record.

The date was the day Lily's mother supposedly died.

But the patient name wasn't Lily's mother.

It was Vanessa.

I looked at Mason.

"What does this mean?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I kept reading.

Then I found the report.

A police report.

A complaint.

Against Vanessa.

The accusation:

Interfering with a mother and daughter's relationship.

I felt sick.

"Why didn't anyone know?""

Mason whispered:

"Because she destroyed the evidence.""

I looked at him.

"How do you know?""

He pointed to the last page.

A handwritten note.

Not from Vanessa.

From someone else.

Someone who had been watching.

The note said:

*I know what you did. You can't erase the truth forever.*

I heard the front door close downstairs.

Both of us froze.

Mason whispered:

"She's back.""

I grabbed the folder.

"Stay behind me.""

Footsteps moved through the house.

Slow.

Calm.

Not rushed.

Vanessa appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

Her eyes immediately went to the folder in my hand.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she said:

"You weren't supposed to find that.""

My voice was cold.

"You knew.""

She closed her eyes.

"Michael...""

"No.""

I walked down the stairs.

"You let me believe Lily's mother was dead.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"I was protecting her.""

"From what?""

Her answer came quietly.

"From the woman who gave birth to her.""

I stared at her.

"You're still blaming her?""

Vanessa stepped closer.

"You don't know who Lily's mother really was.""

"Then tell me.""

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told me there was another secret.

Another lie.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

"Because if you find her, you'll understand why Lily was never supposed to be yours.""

The room went silent.

Mason looked at me.

I looked at Vanessa.

And then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed a name.

May you like

A name I thought I would never see.

*Lily's mother.*
