Chapter 12: The Truth That Broke the Family Apart
I drove to the address Mason sent me.
This time, I didn't feel angry.
I felt empty.
There were too many lies.
Too many people claiming they were protecting Lily.
But Lily was the one person nobody had protected.
I parked outside the small house.
The lights were on.
Someone was home.
I knocked.
The door opened slowly.
A man stood there.
Older than I expected.
Tired.
But his eyes immediately went to me.
And I knew.
He knew who I was.
"Michael?""
I froze.
"Daniel Carter?""
He nodded.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
"Where is my daughter?""
The question broke something inside me.
Because he wasn't angry.
He sounded like a father who had been waiting years.
"I don't know.""
His face fell.
"What do you mean you don't know?""
"Vanessa took her.""
His expression changed.
"Vanessa?""
I stepped back.
"You know her.""
Daniel looked away.
"Yes.""
"Tell me everything.""
He opened the door.
"Come inside.""
The house was simple.
Quiet.
On the wall were pictures.
Not hundreds like Vanessa's.
Only a few.
But they were all of Lily.
A baby.
A toddler.
A little girl.
Photos he shouldn't have had.
"How did you get these?""
Daniel looked at them.
"Emily.""
I stopped.
"Emily gave them to you?""
He nodded.
"After she left with Lily.""
My head spun.
"She left?""
Daniel sighed.
"This is what nobody understands.""
He sat down.
"Everyone thinks there was one villain.""
I stayed standing.
"There wasn't?""
"No.""
He looked at me.
"There were mistakes. Secrets. Fear.""
I crossed my arms.
"Start at the beginning.""
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Lily was born after Emily and I separated.""
"Why?""
"Because our marriage was falling apart.""
He looked down.
"But when Lily was born, I wanted to be there.""
"Then why didn't you?""
"Because Emily told me Lily wasn't mine.""
I remembered Vanessa saying the same thing.
"Was that true?""
Daniel looked at me.
"No.""
The room went silent.
"What?""
"DNA proved she was my daughter.""
My chest tightened.
"Then why didn't you fight?""
"I did.""
He looked at the floor.
"But Vanessa helped Emily disappear.""
My heart sank.
"How?""
"She told me Emily had moved away. She told me Lily was safe. She gave me fake information.""
I shook my head.
"Why would Vanessa do that?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Because she wanted a child.""
The same answer.
Again.
I sat down.
"Then why did she marry me?""
Daniel's expression softened.
"Because you were the perfect person.""
I hated hearing that.
"Meaning?""
"Someone who would love Lily. Someone with a stable job. Someone who would never question taking care of a child.""
My stomach turned.
I had been chosen.
Not loved.
Chosen.
Daniel continued.
"But something changed.""
"What?""
"Vanessa became obsessed.""
I looked up.
"With Lily?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Because Lily reminded her of something she lost.""
"What?""
Before he could answer, the front door opened.
We both turned.
Emily walked in.
She stopped when she saw me.
Then she whispered:
"Michael.""
I stood.
"You knew.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was going to tell you.""
"When?""
She had no answer.
Daniel looked between us.
"Emily.""
She lowered her head.
"I was afraid.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone is afraid.""
I pointed toward the room.
"And Lily?""
Nobody spoke.
Then Emily said something that made my blood run cold.
"Michael, there is one thing you still don't know.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She looked toward the window.
Then whispered:
"Vanessa didn't take Lily because she wanted custody.""
My heart stopped.
"Then why did she take her?""
Emily's face turned pale.
"Because Vanessa knows something about Lily that could destroy all of us.""
And before I could ask what she meant, my phone rang.
It was my sister.
I answered.
Her voice was shaking.
"Michael...""
"What happened?""
A long pause.
Then:
"Lily woke up.""
Relief rushed through me.
Until I heard the rest.
"She told me something about Vanessa.""
My grip tightened.
"What?""

"She said Vanessa told her to never tell Daddy what happened the night Mommy disappeared.""
