Chapter 8: The People Who Protected Him
For years, I believed the most dangerous people were the ones who openly showed cruelty.
I was wrong.
The most dangerous people were the ones who smiled while they destroyed lives.
Daniel Hayes was one of those people.
But now we knew he wasn’t alone.
Laura sat in the hospital waiting area, staring at the floor.
“My own brother.””
Her voice cracked.
“How could he do this?””
I sat beside her.
“Sometimes people choose power over loyalty.””
She shook her head.
“He wasn’t like that.””
I looked at her.
“People change.””
She wiped her eyes.
“Or maybe I never knew him.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because Emily probably felt the same way about Daniel.
She had married someone she thought she knew.
Then discovered a stranger.
Detective Collins approached us.
“We need to move quickly.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel’s attorney just filed an emergency motion.””
“For what?””
“To claim your daughter is unstable and needs supervision.””
I felt anger rise.
Emily overheard.
“They’re trying to take control of me.””
I turned toward her.
“They’re trying to make people doubt you.””
She looked at the flash drive.
“Because of what’s on here.””
Detective Collins nodded.
“The drive contains enough information to expose several crimes.””
“But?””
He hesitated.
“But powerful people rarely fall without fighting.””
That evening, we moved Emily to a private room.
Security was increased.
My former colleagues helped review the evidence.
The more we uncovered, the worse it became.
Daniel wasn’t just hiding abuse.
He was hiding a network.
Companies.
Fake accounts.
People paid to silence complaints.
And names.
So many names.
Then we found something unexpected.
A file labeled:
*EMILY HAYES — CONTINGENCY PLAN*
I stared at the screen.
“No.””
Emily looked terrified.
“What is that?””
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Schedules.
Private information.
Notes about Emily’s behavior.
Her routines.
Her fears.
Her weaknesses.
Someone had been studying my daughter.
Not loving her.
Studying her.
At the bottom of the file was a message.
*If she becomes a problem, repeat Laura’s situation.*
Emily covered her mouth.
I closed the laptop.
Enough.
That was enough.
I had spent my career following rules.
Respecting procedures.
Trusting systems.
But now my daughter’s safety came first.
Detective Collins received a call.
He stepped away.
When he returned, his face was serious.
“We have a problem.””
“What happened?””
“Daniel knows Laura is alive.””
Laura stood immediately.
“How?””
Detective Collins looked at me.
“Someone inside the investigation leaked information.””
The room went quiet.
Emily whispered:
“So nobody is safe.””
I looked at her.
“Listen to me.””
She looked up.
“We are not fighting them because we have more power.””
I squeezed her hand.
“We are fighting them because we have the truth.””
For the first time, she nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Just breathing.
Then a voice.
Daniel.
“You should have stayed out of this, Colonel.””
My expression hardened.
“You hurt my daughter.””
A quiet laugh.
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Your daughter hurt herself by trusting the wrong people.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone was listening.
Then Daniel said:
“You want the truth?””
A pause.
“Come alone.””
I said nothing.
“Because if you don’t…”
His voice lowered.
May you like
“You’ll never find out what really happened to Emily’s biological father.””
The call ended.
