Chapter 2: The Secret In Her Hand
Emily refused to let go of the flash drive.
Even when the nurses came in.
Even when the doctors asked her questions.
Even when I told her she was safe.
Her fingers remained wrapped around that tiny piece of plastic like it was the only thing keeping her alive.
After Victoria and her family finally left the room, I closed the door.
Then I sat beside my daughter.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“You need to tell me everything.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
I reached for her hand.
“You don’t have to be scared anymore.””
She looked down at our hands.
“You always said you would protect people.””
“I meant it.””
She swallowed.
“I never thought I would need you to protect me from my own husband’s family.””
The words hurt more than any injury I had seen.
“What did Daniel do?””
Emily looked away.
That answer told me enough.
“Mom…”
“Tell me.””
Her voice became smaller.
“Daniel knew.””
I felt cold.
“Knew what?””
“That they were hurting me.””
The room went silent.
I had faced enemies who wanted to destroy me.
But betrayal from someone who promised to love your child?
That was different.
“What happened tonight?””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“It started because of the files.””
“What files?””
She looked at the flash drive.
“Daniel’s family owns several companies. Everyone thinks they’re successful because they’re smart.””
She paused.
“They’re successful because they hide things.””
I leaned closer.
“What kind of things?””
Emily looked toward the door.
“Financial records. Fake reports. Payments to people they shouldn’t be paying.””
My expression hardened.
“And you found this?””
She nodded.
“Daniel left his laptop open one night. I wasn’t trying to search through it. I just saw my name.””
“Your name?””
“He had documents about me.””
A chill moved through me.
“What documents?””
Emily’s voice cracked.
“Plans.””
I stared at her.
“Plans for what?””
She squeezed the flash drive.
“For how they would control me.””
I felt anger rising.
Not the reckless kind.
The controlled kind.
The kind that had helped me survive years in command.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Emily wiped her face.
“Three weeks ago, I told Daniel I wanted to leave.””
“And?””
“He locked my bank accounts.””
My hands tightened.
“He said everything I had belonged to his family because they supported me.””
I looked at her bruised arms.
“And tonight?””
“Tonight, Victoria demanded the flash drive.””
Emily looked terrified.
“She knew I had copied everything.””
“Who hurt you?””
She closed her eyes.
“Everyone was there.””
My heart sank.
“Emily.””
“Daniel held me down while his mother searched my room.””
The room felt smaller.
The hospital monitor continued beeping.
A normal sound in a moment that felt impossible.
I stood up and walked to the window.
For years, I had taught soldiers that information was power.
Now my daughter was holding information that could destroy a powerful family.
But there was something else.
Something Victoria said.
You don’t understand what you have.
I turned back.
“Why didn’t you give it to them?””
Emily looked at me.
“Because I knew if they got it back, they would make sure nobody ever believed me.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“So I held onto it.””
I sat beside her again.
“You did the right thing.””
She looked surprised.
“Even though I got hurt?””
“Especially because you got hurt.””
She looked at me.
I continued.
“You survived something terrible. That doesn’t make you weak.””
A small knock came from the door.
A nurse entered.
“Colonel, there’s someone here asking to see you.””
“Who?””
The nurse hesitated.
“A man named Daniel Hayes.””
Emily immediately grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Mom, don’t let him in.””
The fear in her voice was different.
Not fear of anger.
Fear of something worse.
I stepped toward the door.
“Why?””
Emily whispered:
“Because he doesn’t come to apologize.””
The door opened slightly.
Daniel stood outside.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Not a single sign of guilt.
He looked at me.
Then he looked at Emily.
And smiled.
May you like
“Colonel,” he said softly.
“I think we need to talk about what my wife stole.””
