Chapter 12: The Woman Behind The Curtain

Victoria Hayes had disappeared.

Not escaped.

Not vanished.

Disappeared.

Every account connected to her was empty.

Every address was abandoned.

Every person who worked for her suddenly knew nothing.

It was almost impressive.

Almost.

But I had spent my career finding people who believed they could hide forever.

There was always a mistake.

Always a weakness.

Always something left behind.

Detective Collins placed a file on the table.

“She has been planning this for years.””

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Meetings.

Payments.

Names.

And one name appeared again and again.

Victoria.

Not as Daniel’s mother.

Not as a family member.

As the person directing everything.

Emily stared at the documents.

“She controlled him.””

“Yes,” I said.

“Daniel thought he was powerful.””

I looked at the evidence.

“But he was someone else’s weapon.””

That night, Emily and I sat together quietly.

For the first time since the hospital, there was no panic.

No shouting.

No threats.

Just silence.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Do you hate him?””

I knew who she meant.

Daniel.

I thought about it.

Then I shook my head.

“No.””

She looked surprised.

“Why?””

“Because hate keeps you connected to someone.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t want anything connecting me to him.””

Emily smiled slightly.

“That sounds like something you’d say.””

I smiled back.

“Probably.””

Then her expression changed.

“Mom?””

“What?””

“What happens now?””

I looked out the window.

“Now we finish this.””

The next morning, we received information.

Victoria was going to leave the country.

She had purchased a private flight.

Time was running out.

Detective Collins gathered the team.

“We need to move carefully.””

I nodded.

Because this wasn’t just about arresting someone.

This was about proving everything.

If Victoria escaped, she could claim everything was a misunderstanding.

She could rewrite the story.

She could make Emily feel powerless again.

And I refused to let that happen.

We arrived at the private airport just before sunrise.

The runway was quiet.

Too quiet.

A small aircraft waited nearby.

Then we saw her.

Victoria Hayes.

Perfect clothes.

Perfect hair.

Still wearing the same expression she had in Emily’s hospital room.

Like nothing could touch her.

She saw us.

And smiled.

“I was wondering when you’d figure it out.””

Detective Collins stepped forward.

“Victoria Hayes, you are under arrest.””

She looked at me.

Not him.

Me.

“You know what’s funny, Colonel?””

I said nothing.

“She was always the weak one.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Victoria smiled.

“Your daughter.””

Emily stood beside me.

Victoria continued.

“Because she trusted people.””

I looked at Emily.

Then back at Victoria.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“She survived people like you.””

For the first time, Victoria’s smile disappeared.

But then she laughed.

Because she still believed she had one final advantage.

She reached into her bag.

Everyone reacted instantly.

But she didn’t pull out a weapon.

She pulled out a document.

And held it toward me.

“You want the truth?””

She smiled.

“Then ask yourself why Emily’s father never told you he was alive when he disappeared.””

I froze.

The world seemed to stop.

Emily looked at me.

“Mom?””

Victoria stepped backward.

Because she knew she had just opened a door we hadn’t expected.

May you like

And behind that door…

Was another secret.
