Chapter 7: The Face Behind the Lie
The hospital went dark.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Three seconds can feel like an eternity when you have spent your life learning to recognize danger.
The machines in Emily’s room stopped humming.
The hallway lights disappeared.
The only sound was the emergency alarms slowly beginning to activate.
Detective Collins reached for his flashlight.
“Everyone stay where you are.””
My hand immediately moved toward Emily.
“Mom…”
“I’m here.””
She grabbed my arm.
Laura stood frozen near the doorway, staring at the photograph still in Detective Collins’ hand.
The picture.
The person beside Daniel.
The person she claimed was dead.
I looked at her.
“Who is it?””
Laura’s lips trembled.
“My brother.””
The room became silent again.
Detective Collins looked at her.
“Your brother?””
Laura nodded slowly.
“Michael.””
I studied the photograph.
Daniel was standing beside a man outside a warehouse.
Both of them were smiling.
Like friends.
Like partners.
“Everyone thought Michael died in an accident,” Laura whispered.
“When?””
“Four years ago.””
Emily looked confused.
“But before you disappeared?””
Laura nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Detective Collins.
“What does this mean?””
He stared at the photograph.
“It means someone has been lying for a long time.””
The emergency lights finally came on.
A nurse rushed into the room.
“Are you all okay?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
The power outage wasn’t random.
Not after we found evidence.
Not after Laura returned.
Not after Daniel realized we were getting closer.
I stepped into the hallway.
“Detective.””
He followed.
“You think Daniel did this?””
“I think someone wanted us distracted.””
He looked down the hallway.
“Colonel, there’s something else.””
“What?””
He pulled out his phone.
“I received a message while the power was out.””
I looked at him.
“From who?””
He hesitated.
“Unknown number.””
“What did it say?””
He showed me.
*STOP LOOKING FOR THE DEAD.*
My expression hardened.
“Someone knows about Laura.””
“Yes.””
“And they know about us.””
Detective Collins nodded.
Before we could continue, Emily called my name.
“Mom!””
I rushed back inside.
She was holding the photograph.
Her hands were shaking.
“Look.””
I moved closer.
She pointed at the corner.
A small detail I hadn’t noticed.
A building number.
“Where was this taken?””
Detective Collins checked.
His face changed.
“A property owned by Hayes Holdings.””
Laura covered her mouth.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She stared at the image.
“That building.””
Her voice became quiet.
“That’s where Daniel took me after I tried to leave.””
My chest tightened.
“You were there?””
Laura nodded.
“I thought he was going to kill me.””
Emily looked terrified.
“Mom…”
I held her hand.
“We’re going to find out the truth.””
That afternoon, we obtained the backup footage from Daniel’s hidden server.
The video loaded slowly.
Everyone stood around the screen.
Then the image appeared.
A hallway.
A room.
And Daniel.
Emily immediately looked away.
But I stayed focused.
Daniel entered the room carrying a folder.
He spoke to someone off-camera.
“Your sister was easier than I expected.””
Laura froze.
“My sister?””
Daniel continued.
“She trusted too much.””
A man’s voice answered.
“What about the other one?””
Daniel smiled.
“Emily?””
My blood ran cold.
He knew.
He had planned everything.
The video continued.
Daniel opened the folder.
“She’ll eventually understand that nobody believes women like her.””
I felt Emily’s fingers tighten around mine.
Then another voice spoke.
A voice that made Laura step backward.
Because she recognized it.
Michael.
“You promised nobody would find out.””
Laura whispered:
“No…”
The footage showed the man stepping into view.
Michael.
Alive.
Standing beside Daniel.
The screen froze.
Nobody spoke.
Then Laura whispered the words that changed everything.
“My brother didn’t disappear.””
May you like
She looked at me.
“He was helping Daniel.””
