Chapter 11: The Betrayal Inside The Investigation

I stared at the signature.

I read it once.

Then again.

Hoping my eyes were wrong.

They weren’t.

Detective Collins noticed my reaction.

“You recognize the name.””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Emily looked between us.

“Who is it?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

Because saying it aloud made it real.

The person who had been helping us.

The person who had gained our trust.

The person who had access to everything.

“Your attorney,” Detective Collins said.

Emily’s face changed.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“No, that’s impossible.””

The attorney.

Richard Miles.

A man who had represented military families for years.

A man I trusted.

A man who sat beside me while we reviewed evidence.

A man who told me he wanted justice for my daughter.

I felt something I hated.

Not fear.

Disappointment.

Because betrayal from an enemy is expected.

Betrayal from someone standing beside you hurts differently.

Detective Collins placed more documents on the table.

“These are authorization forms.””

Emily looked at them.

“Why would he do this?””

I studied the papers.

Because the answer was probably simple.

Money.

Power.

Fear.

But I refused to assume.

“We need proof.””

Detective Collins nodded.

“That’s why we’re watching him.””

That evening, we followed Richard.

Not personally.

Not recklessly.

We watched.

We waited.

And we learned.

He met someone at a private restaurant.

A woman.

When the photograph came back, everyone became silent.

Victoria Hayes.

Emily covered her mouth.

“She’s not even in custody?””

Detective Collins shook his head.

“Her lawyers delayed everything.””

Of course.

The wealthy always had another door.

But this time, we were ready.

The next day, Richard arrived at the hospital.

He walked in carrying flowers.

A perfect performance.

“Emily, I heard you’re feeling better.””

She looked at him.

“Are you?””

He stopped.

“What?””

“Feeling better?””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Richard placed the flowers down.

“I don’t understand.””

I stepped forward.

“We know.””

His face went pale.

“Know what?””

I held up the documents.

“That you signed the authorization.””

Silence.

Richard slowly sat down.

“You don’t understand.””

Emily laughed quietly.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You’re right.””

“We don’t understand how someone who was supposed to protect us could help them.””

Richard looked away.

“I was trying to control the damage.””

My expression hardened.

“Damage?””

He sighed.

“Daniel’s family is powerful.””

“So you helped them?””

“I tried to keep Emily safe.””

Emily looked at him.

“By letting them hurt me?””

Richard had no answer.

That was when I knew.

He had already convinced himself he was the victim.

People like him always did.

They turned their own choices into excuses.

Detective Collins entered.

“Richard Miles.””

Richard looked up.

“Yes?””

“You’re under arrest.””

His face changed.

“You can’t do this.””

Detective Collins calmly replied:

“We can.””

As they escorted him away, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke at first.

Then a woman whispered:

“Colonel.””

I recognized the voice.

Victoria.

“You arrested the wrong people.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Where are you?””

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand.””

She paused.

“Daniel was never the person in charge.””

The call ended.

I looked at Emily.

And for the first time in days…

I felt something colder than anger.

May you like

Because we had spent all this time chasing the people who carried out the plan.

Not the person who created it.
