Chapter 9: The Last Thing Robert Left Me

Thomas called the police while Susan tried to reach Lily.

I stood beside the conference room window, staring at the Atlanta skyline.

My granddaughter was seven years old.

She had already watched her mother destroy my birthday cake. She had overheard conversations about moving me into assisted living. Now she was apparently being taken somewhere against her wishes.

I couldn't let her disappear.

"Thomas, did the police find Tiffany?""

He shook his head.

"They're checking the address she called from.""

"What about Daniel?""

"They've been informed of the potential financial fraud and the concerns involving Lily.""

I paced across the room.

"Can they stop him from taking her?""

"They'll need to establish the circumstances and determine whether there's an immediate safety concern. We have to give them the information as accurately as possible.""

Susan held up her phone.

"I found the hotel.""

I rushed over.

She had searched the photograph Lily sent and identified the logo on the luggage tag.

It belonged to an airport hotel near Hartsfield-Jackson.

Thomas immediately forwarded the information to the responding officer.

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

"Grandma?""

Lily.

I nearly collapsed with relief.

"Sweetheart! Where are you?""

"I'm in the bathroom.""

"Are you alone?""

"Yes. Daddy is talking to somebody.""

"Can you tell me where you are?""

She whispered the hotel name.

I recognized it immediately.

"Listen carefully, honey. Stay where you are. Don't go anywhere with anyone unless the police tell you it's safe.""

"Is Mommy here?""

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

"Grandma, Daddy said we're going on vacation.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did he tell you where?""

"No. He said we're going to live somewhere new.""

I heard a door open.

Then Daniel's voice.

"Lily? Where are you?""

She whispered, "I have to go.""

"Wait, sweetheart—"

The call ended.

I looked at Thomas.

"We have to get there.""

He nodded.

"I'll meet the officers there.""

Susan grabbed her handbag.

"I'm coming with you.""

We arrived at the hotel shortly afterward.

Two officers were already in the lobby.

Thomas approached them and explained the situation.

One officer asked me to remain near the reception desk while they checked the floor.

I couldn't stand still.

Every few seconds, I looked toward the elevators.

Then I heard a familiar voice.

"Grandma!""

Lily came running down the hallway.

I dropped my handbag and knelt.

She threw her arms around my neck.

I held her so tightly that she laughed.

"You're squeezing me!""

"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""

She pulled away.

"Are you mad at me?""

I brushed her hair away from her face.

"Never. Not for one second.""

Daniel appeared behind her.

His face was red.

"What are you doing here?""

I stood up.

"Getting my granddaughter.""

"You can't just show up and take her!""

One officer stepped between us.

"Sir, we're here to establish what's happening. Please lower your voice.""

Daniel pointed toward me.

"She's interfering with my family.""

I looked at him.

"Your daughter called me because she was frightened.""

"She's seven! She doesn't know what she's saying.""

Lily grabbed my hand.

"Yes, I do!""

Daniel stared at her.

"Lily, go back to the room.""

She shook her head.

"No.""

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in my son's eyes.

Not fear of losing his mother.

Fear of losing control.

The officers spoke with Daniel separately while another officer took Lily to a quiet area with Susan.

I remained in the lobby.

Then a woman walked through the hotel entrance.

Tiffany.

Her hair was disheveled, and she was holding a small suitcase.

When she saw Daniel speaking to the police, she stopped.

"Daniel?""

He turned.

"What are you doing here?""

She looked at me.

Then at Lily.

"Margaret, I need to tell you something.""

Daniel moved toward her.

"Don't.""

Tiffany stepped backward.

"No. I'm done.""

She opened her handbag and removed a small black flash drive.

"I copied everything.""

Daniel's face changed.

"What did you do?""

"Everything, Daniel. The messages. The bank documents. The recordings.""

He lunged toward her, but the officer stepped between them.

"Sir, stay where you are.""

Tiffany handed the flash drive to Thomas.

"Rebecca sent him the original documents. Daniel has been using my laptop to communicate with her.""

Thomas examined the device.

"Does this contain the original files?""

"Yes. And something else.""

"What?""

Tiffany looked at me.

"Your husband.""

I frowned.

"Robert?""

She nodded.

"Rebecca had a recording of a conversation between Daniel and Robert from before he died.""

My heart started pounding.

"What conversation?""

Tiffany looked down.

"Daniel was asking Robert to sign over the house. Robert refused. But then he said something that scared Daniel.""

Thomas asked, "What did Robert say?""

Tiffany swallowed.

"He said the house wasn't the only thing he'd protected.""

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know. Daniel never explained it.""

Thomas took the flash drive and handed it to the officer.

The officer told us the material would need to be preserved and examined as evidence.

Daniel was asked to remain at the hotel while they investigated the circumstances surrounding the attempted departure with Lily.

Tiffany sat down on a lobby chair and began crying.

I approached her.

"Where is the jewelry?""

She looked up.

"Rebecca has it.""

"Why?""

"She took it as security for the money Daniel owed.""

I felt a wave of anger.

"My husband's wedding ring was in that jewelry box.""

Tiffany covered her face.

"I'm sorry.""

I walked away.

I wasn't ready to forgive her.

Not after the cake.

Not after the humiliation.

Not after watching Lily become frightened of her own parents.

But I needed to understand what Robert had known.

That evening, Thomas and I returned to his office.

He had arranged for a forensic specialist to examine the flash drive.

The first files were exactly what Tiffany had described.

Messages between Daniel and Rebecca.

Scans of the fraudulent power of attorney.

Copies of the property transfer.

A spreadsheet showing the missing $84,500.

Then the specialist opened a video file.

The date was eleven months before Robert died.

The screen showed my husband's old study.

Robert was sitting behind his desk.

Daniel stood across from him.

I recognized the room immediately.

I recognized the wooden clock Robert had repaired himself.

And I recognized the sound of my husband's voice.

"Daniel, I know about the money you've been taking.""

My son looked down.

"Dad, I can explain.""

Robert shook his head.

"I don't want another explanation. I want you to understand something.""

He leaned forward.

"Margaret will never lose this house. And if you ever try to take it from her, you'll discover that I've already made arrangements you know nothing about.""

The video ended.

I stared at the screen.

Thomas slowly closed his laptop.

"Margaret, there's another file.""

He opened it.

This one was labeled:

*ROBERT BENNETT — FINAL INSTRUCTIONS.*

I looked at the date.

It had been created three days before Robert died.

Then Thomas turned toward me.

"Your husband left instructions that were supposed to be activated only if someone attempted to steal your property.""

"What instructions?""

Thomas opened the file.

May you like

And the first line made me forget how to breathe.

*If Daniel attempts to take Margaret's house, transfer control of the family inheritance to the person he least expects.*
