Chapter 12: The Document My Husband Never Signed

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

"Robert's signature?"" I finally whispered.

"Yes," Tiffany said.

"There's another document. Daniel has been keeping it in his office.""

Thomas leaned toward the phone.

"Tiffany, what document?""

"A beneficiary amendment.""

Eleanor stood up.

"That's impossible. The trust administrator never approved an amendment.""

Tiffany continued.

"Rebecca told Daniel that if they could change the beneficiary designation, they could access the investment money before anyone noticed.""

My hands began shaking.

"Who did they name?""

There was a pause.

Then Tiffany answered.

"Daniel.""

I looked at Thomas.

He closed his eyes briefly.

That explained everything.

Daniel wasn't merely trying to sell my house and take my savings.

He was attempting to redirect Robert's inheritance before the trust could protect Lily.

"Where is the document?"" Thomas asked.

"At Rebecca's office. Daniel has a copy.""

"Can you get it?""

"I don't know.""

"Tiffany, this is important. If the document is genuine evidence of forgery, we need to preserve it.""

She started crying.

"I'll try.""

The call ended.

Thomas immediately contacted the trust administrator.

Eleanor explained that no amendment had ever been authorized.

But there was another problem.

The trust's records showed a request for a substantial distribution had been submitted two days earlier.

The requested amount was $450,000.

The recipient account belonged to Daniel.

I felt sick.

"Can they release it?""

"Not without verification," Eleanor answered.

"But the request must be formally challenged.""

Thomas began drafting an emergency fraud notice.

Meanwhile, I called Lily's aunt, Jennifer.

She answered immediately.

"Margaret, she's here. She's watching cartoons.""

"Thank you for keeping her safe.""

"Of course. Is Daniel really trying to take everything?""

I looked at the documents scattered across the table.

"Yes.""

Jennifer lowered her voice.

"Lily told me something last night. She said her father made her practice saying that you had been forgetting things.""

My heart broke.

"What?""

"He told her that if anyone asked, she should say you sometimes got confused and didn't know where you were.""

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

A seven-year-old child had been instructed to lie about her grandmother.

"Did she tell you anything else?""

Jennifer hesitated.

"She said Daniel showed her a video of you throwing Tiffany's handbag into the fire. He told her that you were dangerous.""

I closed my eyes.

He was using my worst moment against me.

Not to protect Lily.

To make her afraid of me.

"Please tell her I love her.""

"I will.""

After the call, Thomas asked me to sit down.

"Margaret, there's something we need to discuss.""

I looked at him.

"The trust contains a provision allowing an independent trustee to take immediate protective action if there is evidence of fraud or coercion.""

"Meaning?""

"Meaning we can request that Daniel's access to any family assets be suspended while the investigation proceeds.""

I nodded.

"Do it.""

Eleanor signed the necessary authorization.

Thomas submitted the emergency request.

Then his phone rang.

He listened carefully.

"Yes. I understand.""

He wrote something down.

"Thank you. Please send the confirmation.""

When he hung up, he looked at me.

"The trust administrator has frozen the requested $450,000 distribution.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

"But there's a problem.""

Of course there was.

"What now?""

"The amendment Daniel submitted contains a witness statement from Robert's former accountant.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

"Martin Hale.""

I recognized the name immediately.

Martin had worked with Robert for nearly twenty years.

He'd attended our Christmas parties and once helped Daniel prepare his first tax return.

"Martin wouldn't do this.""

Thomas turned his laptop toward me.

The document showed Martin's signature beneath a declaration stating that Robert had personally requested the beneficiary change.

I shook my head.

"That's not possible. Robert was in the hospital when this supposedly happened.""

Thomas checked the date.

Then he opened another file.

"You're right.""

The amendment had been dated eleven days after Robert's death.

I stared at the screen.

A dead man's signature.

A forged witness statement.

A fraudulent beneficiary change.

It was becoming clear that Daniel and Rebecca had been planning this long before my birthday.

Eleanor picked up her phone.

"I'm calling Martin.""

She dialed.

No answer.

She tried again.

Still nothing.

Then an email arrived from an address I recognized.

Martin Hale.

The subject line read:

*I NEED TO TELL YOU WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO ROBERT'S FILES.*

Thomas opened it.

The message contained only three sentences.

Margaret, I'm sorry.

Rebecca approached me six months ago and asked me to verify Robert's old signatures. I refused.

But Daniel has something that could destroy all of us.

Thomas looked up.

"What could he possibly have?""

Before anyone could answer, another email arrived.

This time, it contained an attachment.

A scanned copy of Robert's original estate-planning documents.

One page had been highlighted.

At the bottom was a handwritten note in Robert's familiar writing.

*If Daniel ever attempts to alter this agreement, contact Martin. He knows where the original evidence is hidden.*

I stared at the screen.

"Where is it hidden?""

Thomas scrolled to the end of the scanned page.

There was a handwritten address.

My old family storage unit.

The one Robert had rented twenty years earlier and never told me he'd kept.

Then my phone rang.

Martin Hale.

I answered immediately.

"Martin?""

His voice was shaking.

"Margaret, listen carefully. Daniel knows I've contacted you.""

"Where are you?""

"I'm at home. I don't think I can stay here.""

"What evidence do you have?""

He took a breath.

"Robert gave me a sealed envelope before he died. He told me never to open it unless Daniel tried to take control of your finances.""

My eyes filled with tears.

"What's inside?""

"Original recordings, bank records, and the real beneficiary agreement.""

Thomas leaned toward the phone.

"Martin, we need to secure those materials immediately.""

Martin spoke faster.

"There's something else. Robert discovered Rebecca had been stealing from one of his business accounts years ago. He was going to report her, but she threatened to expose something about Daniel.""

I felt cold.

"What did she threaten to expose?""

Martin went silent.

Then he said:

"Margaret, your husband didn't just discover that Daniel was in debt.""

A noise sounded in the background.

Someone was knocking on Martin's door.

Hard.

Three times.

Martin whispered, "Oh, God.""

"Martin, what's happening?""

His voice dropped to almost nothing.

"Daniel is here.""

The line went dead.

Thomas immediately called the police and provided Martin's address.

I stood up.

"We have to get there.""

Thomas shook his head.

"The police are responding. We cannot interfere with their investigation.""

I looked at the handwritten note from Robert.

For the first time, I wondered whether the financial fraud was only part of the truth.

What had Daniel been hiding?

And what had Robert discovered that made him prepare such extraordinary protections?

A few minutes later, Thomas received a message from the responding officers.

Martin's house was empty.

His front door was unlocked.

His phone had been left on the kitchen counter.

And on the dining table was a sealed envelope addressed to me.

May you like

On the front, in Robert's handwriting, were seven words.

*Margaret, there is something about Daniel you must know.*
