Chapter 13: The Secret Robert Took to His Grave

"Margaret, there is something about Daniel you must know.""

I stared at the envelope Thomas had placed on his desk.

Robert's handwriting was unmistakable.

The same handwriting that had appeared on birthday cards, grocery lists, anniversary notes, and the little reminders he used to leave beside my coffee cup.

My hands trembled as I broke the seal.

Inside was a letter and a small photograph.

The photograph showed Robert standing beside a younger man outside a warehouse. Daniel was there too, looking considerably younger, perhaps in his late twenties.

On the back, Robert had written:

The beginning of everything.

I unfolded the letter.

My darling Margaret,

I have tried to find the right moment to tell you something about our son. Every time I considered it, I remembered how proud you were of him.

I couldn't bring myself to destroy that pride.

I stopped reading.

Thomas quietly closed the office door.

I continued.

Four years ago, Daniel approached me with an investment opportunity. He claimed he had found a commercial property that could generate substantial returns.

I gave him money because I trusted him.

The investment was never completed.

When I asked for the money back, Daniel told me the funds had been lost.

My eyes moved down the page.

But I eventually discovered that he had transferred the money into an account controlled by Rebecca Sloan.

I looked up.

"Four years ago?""

Thomas nodded.

"That's what the letter says.""

Robert had written that he'd confronted Daniel privately.

Daniel had promised to repay everything.

He'd even signed an agreement acknowledging the debt.

But instead of repaying it, he'd borrowed more money from other people to cover the original loss.

The situation had grown worse with every passing month.

Then came the sentence that made my chest tighten.

Margaret, I discovered that Daniel had been using my name to secure loans without my permission.

I covered my mouth.

"Robert knew?""

Thomas nodded.

"He apparently documented everything.""

The letter continued.

I wanted to protect you from this. But I also wanted to give Daniel an opportunity to make things right.

I offered him a final chance. He could confess, repay what he owed, and accept responsibility.

He refused.

I wiped my cheeks.

The last paragraph was short.

If Daniel has reached the point of trying to take your home, then I fear he has crossed a line from which he may never return.

Please remember that you are not responsible for his choices.

I loved our son. But I will not allow him to destroy the woman I spent my life protecting.

Forever yours,

Robert.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Thomas asked, "Margaret, what does the photograph mean to you?""

I turned it over again.

The warehouse.

The younger man beside Robert.

I recognized him.

It was Martin Hale.

But there was something else.

A company logo appeared on the warehouse door.

*Bennett Industrial Holdings.*

I looked at Eleanor.

"Wasn't that Robert's old business?""

She nodded.

"Yes. He sold most of his interests before retirement.""

"Then why would Daniel be there?""

Eleanor took the photograph.

"Because that warehouse was part of the original investment Daniel mismanaged.""

She studied the image.

"Margaret, this photograph may help us establish when the financial problems began.""

Thomas's phone rang.

It was the officer investigating Martin's disappearance.

Martin had been located.

He was at a nearby police station.

He had left his home voluntarily after receiving threatening messages from an unknown number.

He was shaken but unharmed.

I insisted on speaking to him.

Within an hour, Thomas arranged a meeting.

Martin entered the conference room looking ten years older than I remembered.

"Margaret," he said quietly.

I stood.

"Are you all right?""

He nodded.

"I'm sorry I didn't come forward sooner.""

I looked at him.

"What happened to Robert's money?""

Martin sat down.

"Daniel and Rebecca diverted approximately $260,000 through several business accounts. Robert discovered it, but before he could report the matter, Daniel begged him to wait.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel claimed Rebecca had threatened him. She allegedly had evidence of another financial arrangement involving him.""

"What arrangement?""

Martin looked toward Thomas.

Then he reached into his jacket and removed a small USB drive.

"Robert recorded their final conversation.""

Thomas accepted the drive.

"Is this the original?""

"Yes. I never made a copy.""

He connected it to a secure computer.

The recording began with Robert's voice.

"Daniel, I want you to tell your mother the truth.""

Daniel answered.

"She doesn't need to know.""

"She's your mother. She's also my wife. You used her personal information.""

"I was going to fix it.""

"How?""

"I needed time.""

Robert's voice became louder.

"You've already taken money from us. Now you're asking me to lie to Margaret?""

Daniel said something indistinct.

Then Robert replied:

"If you continue, I will change the inheritance arrangements.""

There was a long pause.

Then Daniel said something that made my entire body freeze.

"Then I'll make sure she never finds out what really happened to you.""

The recording stopped.

I stared at the screen.

"What did he mean?""

Martin looked down.

"Margaret, there was an incident during Robert's final week in the hospital.""

Thomas leaned forward.

"What incident?""

Martin took a deep breath.

"Daniel had been handling some of Robert's paperwork. He had access to his medical correspondence and insurance records.""

My voice trembled.

"Are you saying Daniel interfered with Robert's medical care?""

Martin shook his head.

"I don't know. I never found evidence that he did. But Robert became extremely frightened after their last meeting.""

He opened another folder.

Inside was a hospital visitor log.

Daniel had visited Robert shortly before his final hospitalization.

The next page contained a handwritten note from Robert.

*Do not allow Daniel to handle any medical or financial decisions without Margaret present.*

I felt tears running down my face.

My husband had been afraid of our son.

The man he'd raised.

The boy he'd taught to ride a bicycle.

The son he'd carried on his shoulders.

Thomas closed the folder gently.

"We won't speculate about anything without evidence. But we will preserve every document and ask investigators to examine the circumstances.""

I nodded.

I needed the truth.

All of it.

Then Martin handed me one final piece of paper.

It was a copy of a payment instruction dated three weeks before Robert died.

The recipient was Rebecca Sloan.

The amount was $45,000.

But the authorization contained Robert's signature.

And beneath it was a note in Daniel's handwriting.

*Final payment. Keep Margaret out of this.*

I looked at Thomas.

"Can we prove this signature was forged?""

He nodded.

"With the original documents and a handwriting examiner, we have a strong basis for an investigation.""

Then Eleanor received a call.

She listened for several seconds before slowly lowering her phone.

"Margaret, the trust administrator has found something.""

"What?""

"Someone attempted to withdraw the remaining $1.8 million from the investment account.""

I felt my heart stop.

"Who?""

Eleanor looked at the caller identification record.

"Rebecca Sloan.""

But the administrator had rejected the request.

And the reason was written in Robert's original trust agreement.

*The protective succession clause had officially been activated.*

Daniel had lost his right to inherit.

And the person who would now control the family fortune was Lily.
