Chapter 8: The Neighbor’s Secret
The house next door had always looked ordinary.
That was what scared me.
A normal-looking place.
A normal-looking family.
A normal-looking neighbor who had apparently been hiding something for years.
The police surrounded the property before anyone could leave.
I stood behind the yellow tape, watching officers enter.
My mind kept replaying one sentence.
The person who owns the house next door.
Marcus had not hidden alone.
Someone had helped him.
Someone close enough to watch everything.
Detective Reynolds walked back toward me.
“We need to talk.””
“Who is it?””
He looked toward the house.
“Thomas Bell.””
I knew that name.
Everyone in the neighborhood knew him.
He had lived there for fifteen years.
He brought cookies during holidays.
He helped elderly neighbors with repairs.
He was the kind of person people trusted.
“That’s impossible.””
Reynolds looked at me.
“That’s exactly why people like him get away with things.””
I watched officers search the house.
“What did you find?””
“Hidden cameras.””
My stomach dropped.
“Cameras?””
“In Elena’s house.””
I looked at my sister.
She was sitting in the back of a police vehicle, staring at the ground.
“He was watching them.””
“Yes.””
“For how long?””
“We don’t know.””
I felt sick.
Then the front door of Thomas’s house opened.
An officer walked out holding a box.
Inside were dozens of files.
Photos.
Documents.
My hands tightened.
“Is Marcus there?””
“No.””
“Then where is he?””
Reynolds didn’t answer.
That scared me more.
Suddenly, Leo pulled on my jacket.
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
“What?””
“Thomas was the man who brought me food.””
My heart stopped.
“What did you say?””
Leo looked at the house.
“He came downstairs sometimes.””
The detective immediately turned.
“Thomas came into the room?””
Leo nodded.
“He was nicer than Marcus.””
I swallowed.
“Nicer?””
“He gave me books.””
That almost made it worse.
“Did he ever help you escape?””
Leo looked down.
“No.””
“Why?””
His voice became quiet.
“Because he said Marcus would hurt everyone.””
Everyone.
Not just Leo.
My family.
The police brought Thomas out ten minutes later.
He wasn’t handcuffed.
Not yet.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
He looked directly at me.
And smiled.
That smile made my skin crawl.
Reynolds approached him.
“Thomas Bell.””
“Yes?””
“You’re being detained for questioning.””
Thomas glanced at me.
“About what?””
“Kidnapping. Conspiracy. Evidence tampering.””
Thomas laughed softly.
“You think I’m the villain?””
Nobody answered.
He looked at Leo.
Then back at me.
“You should ask your son what really happened.””
My blood boiled.
“You don’t get to talk to him.””
Thomas smiled.
“I’m the reason he survived.””
The officers moved him toward the vehicle.
I stepped forward.
“You helped keep him trapped.””
“No.””
He stopped.
“I kept him alive.””
The words hit me.
Because for a second, I remembered Claire saying the same thing.
I looked at Reynolds.
“Get him away from here.””
Thomas laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
He leaned toward me.
“Marcus was never in charge.””
The world went quiet.
“What did you say?””
Thomas smiled.
“He thought he was.””
Then he was placed into the police car.
I turned to Reynolds.
“What does that mean?””
The detective looked troubled.
“It means we may have been chasing the wrong person.””
That night, we searched through everything found in Thomas’s house.
The files.
The photos.
The records.
And then we found something that changed everything.
A folder labeled:
*CARTER FAMILY.*
Inside were documents about me.
About Leo.
About Emily.
About every missing child.
But at the bottom was a handwritten note.
A single sentence.
I read it three times before I understood.
*Daniel Carter was never supposed to find Leo.*
My hands shook.
“Why?””
Reynolds looked over my shoulder.
Then he saw the signature.
His face went pale.
“Because someone wanted you to find him.””
I stared at the name.
The person who had written it.
The person who had been guiding everything.
May you like
And the person I trusted most.
*Elena Carter.*
