Chapter 11: The Father I Never Knew

The old property sat thirty miles outside Nashville.

A place I had never visited.

A place my father supposedly sold years ago.

Except he hadn’t.

The police found the records.

The property was still under a hidden company name.

A company connected to Marcus.

A company connected to the missing children.

A company connected to my family.

I sat in the car beside Detective Reynolds, staring at the empty fields surrounding the building.

“This is where it started,” he said.

I looked at him.

“What started?””

“The network.””

I hated that word.

Network.

It made everything sound organized.

Planned.

Like my son’s suffering was just another part of a system.

We entered the building with armed officers.

The inside smelled like dust and old paper.

But there were signs someone had been there recently.

Fresh footprints.

New equipment.

A coffee cup still warm.

“Someone left quickly,” Reynolds said.

I looked around.

“Where is my father?””

“We don’t know.””

Then an officer called from another room.

“Detective!””

We rushed inside.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Not missing children this time.

Families.

Parents.

Siblings.

Including mine.

I saw pictures of myself as a child.

Elena.

My mother.

My father.

And Leo.

A chill moved through me.

“He was watching us.””

Reynolds nodded.

“Looks like it.””

I walked closer.

There was a file with my name on it.

I opened it.

Inside were pages of notes.

My childhood.

My job.

My marriage.

My son.

Every important moment of my life.

Someone had been documenting me.

But one page stopped me.

A note written by my father.

*Daniel must never know the truth until he is ready.*

My hands shook.

Ready for what?

The door behind us slammed.

Everyone turned.

A voice echoed through the building.

“Because you were never ready.””

I froze.

My father stepped into the hallway.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

The officers raised their weapons.

“Don’t move!””

He didn’t.

He just looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I couldn’t speak.

Eight years.

Eight years of grief.

Eight years of believing he was gone.

And he stood in front of me.

“You let me bury you.””

His face changed.

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

My voice exploded.

“You abandoned me.””

His eyes filled with pain.

“I protected you.””

“Stop saying that!””

The building went silent.

“I lost my son because of you.””

My father looked down.

“I know.””

The words surprised me.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked at the walls.

“Because I was there.””

I stepped back.

“You were there when Leo disappeared?””

“Yes.””

My stomach twisted.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because Marcus wasn’t supposed to take Leo.””

“What does that mean?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Marcus was supposed to take the evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“The evidence that could expose all of us.””

I stared.

“All of us?””

He nodded.

“My company.””

“Your company?””

“The one I created.””

My hands went numb.

“You started this?””

“Yes.””

The answer crushed me.

“For what?””

My father looked broken.

“To find children who had no one.””

I stared at him.

“That sounds like an excuse.””

“It became one.””

Silence.

“At first, we helped.””

“And then?””

His voice became quiet.

“Then people like Marcus joined.””

The pieces started connecting.

The missing children.

The files.

The photos.

“You lost control.””

“Yes.””

“And Leo?””

My father looked away.

“I tried to get him back.””

I laughed.

“After fourteen months?””

“I was trapped.””

“By who?””

He looked toward the dark hallway.

Before he could answer, gunfire exploded outside.

Everyone dropped.

The windows shattered.

Officers moved immediately.

When the shooting stopped, we searched the building.

My father was gone.

But on the floor beside where he stood was a piece of paper.

One sentence.

Written in his handwriting.

*The person you trust most is the one who started this.*

I looked at Elena.

She wasn’t there.

My heart sank.

May you like

Because I suddenly realized something.

She had disappeared during the shooting.
