Chapter 2: The Secret Room

I couldn’t move.

Leo’s fingers were wrapped around my wrist.

My son.

My missing son.

Alive.

The world around me disappeared.

The expensive furniture. The beautiful walls. The smell of fresh paint.

None of it mattered.

All I could see was that tiny hand reaching out from a hole beneath my sister’s floor.

“Leo?”” I whispered.

The hand tightened.

“Daddy, please get me out.””

My vision blurred.

I grabbed the broken edge of the floor and pulled.

“Elena, call 911!”” I shouted.

She didn’t move.

She stood frozen near the kitchen entrance, staring at the opening.

“Maya,” I said quickly.

“Take your aunt’s phone and call emergency services.””

My daughter ran.

Elena finally reacted.

“No!””

I turned toward her.

“No?””

She stepped forward.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“I understand my son has been trapped under your house.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You think I wanted this?””

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

She looked down.

That silence destroyed whatever hope I had left.

“You knew where Leo was.””

“I knew he was alive.””

The words hit like a punch.

Maya returned with the phone in her hand.

I barely heard the operator speaking.

My entire focus was on the opening.

“Leo,” I said.

“I’m going to get you out.””

“Daddy…”

His voice was weak.

“I thought you forgot me.””

My chest collapsed.

“Never.””

I removed more boards carefully.

The opening underneath wasn’t a normal crawl space.

There was a hidden room.

A small underground area between the foundation walls.

Someone had built it intentionally.

There was a thin mattress.

A bucket.

Bottles of water.

Blankets.

My son had been living there.

My knees almost gave out.

“How long?”” I whispered.

Leo started crying.

“I don’t know.””

I reached inside and pulled him toward me.

He was thinner than I remembered.

His hair was longer.

His clothes were torn and dirty.

But he was alive.

I held him against my chest.

“I’m sorry,” I repeated.

Over and over.

“I’m so sorry.””

Behind me, Elena spoke softly.

“Daniel…”

I turned.

“Don’t say my name.””

She flinched.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to explain fourteen months of my son’s life.””

The front door suddenly opened.

Two police officers rushed inside.

Maya ran toward them.

“My brother was under the floor!””

The officers looked confused.

Then they saw Leo.

Everything changed.

One officer immediately moved toward us.

“Sir, step back. We need to check the child.””

I refused to let go at first.

Then I forced myself.

Because I knew they needed to help him.

As they examined Leo, I watched Elena.

She wasn’t running.

She wasn’t denying it.

She was crying.

The officer approached her.

“Ma’am, who else has access to this house?””

Elena looked toward the kitchen.

Toward the darkness beyond the hallway.

“I…”

She stopped.

“Who?”” the officer asked.

A sound came from behind the kitchen wall.

A heavy movement.

Everyone froze.

The officer reached for his weapon.

“Is someone else inside?””

Elena whispered:

“Yes.””

The officer turned.

“Who?””

My sister closed her eyes.

And said the name I never expected.

“Marcus.””

My blood ran cold.

Marcus.

Elena’s husband.

The man who had attended every search party.

The man who had hugged me at Leo’s memorial service.

The man who told me, “We’ll find him.””

The officer immediately moved toward the kitchen.

“Where is he?””

Elena shook her head.

“He won’t be there.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me.

“He has another entrance.””

The room went silent.

I stepped toward her.

“Why, Elena?””

She cried harder.

“Because Marcus was obsessed with control. He said Leo saw something he shouldn’t have seen.””

My heart pounded.

“What did Leo see?””

Before she could answer, Leo grabbed my sleeve.

His face had gone pale.

“Daddy.””

I knelt beside him.

“What?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“The man downstairs…”

I felt cold.

“What man?””

Leo whispered:

“He told Aunt Elena that if you ever found me…”

He started shaking.

“If you ever found me, he would make sure you disappeared too.””

Then every light in the house went out.

The police officers raised their flashlights.

From somewhere beneath us came the sound of a door locking.

And then Marcus’s voice echoed through the walls.

“Daniel.””

A slow, terrifying laugh followed.

“You should have left my secret buried.””
