Chapter 3: The Man Behind the Wall

The police searched every room in Elena’s house.

Every closet.

Every cabinet.

Every corner.

But Marcus was gone.

It was impossible.

The officers found no broken windows. No open doors. No footprints outside.

Only one thing.

A hidden passage behind the kitchen wall.

The same passage that connected to the underground room where Leo had been kept.

I stood there staring at the dark opening while police lights flashed through the windows.

Fourteen months.

Fourteen months of searching.

And the person who had helped organize those searches had been hiding my son under his own roof.

Officer Reynolds walked toward me.

“Mr. Carter, I need you to answer some questions.””

I looked at Leo sitting in the ambulance outside, wrapped in a blanket.

“Ask.””

“When was the last time you saw Marcus before tonight?””

I thought back.

“The night before Leo disappeared.””

The officer wrote something down.

“What happened that night?””

I swallowed.

“Marcus came over.””

“Why?””

“He said he wanted to help me install cameras around my house.””

Officer Reynolds looked up.

“Did he install them?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Leo disappeared the next morning.””

The officer exchanged a glance with his partner.

My stomach turned.

There was something they weren’t telling me.

“What?””

Officer Reynolds hesitated.

“We found something inside the passage.””

“What?””

He handed me a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a small red toy car.

Leo’s toy car.

I remembered it instantly.

He carried that car everywhere.

He slept with it under his pillow.

My fingers tightened around the bag.

“Where did you find this?””

“Near a second hidden room.””

My heart sank.

“Second room?””

The officer nodded.

“There’s more under the house.””

I looked back at Elena.

She was sitting in the back of a police vehicle, her face buried in her hands.

I walked toward her.

The officer tried to stop me.

“Mr. Carter—”

“I need answers.””

Elena looked up.

For the first time in years, she looked like a stranger.

“Why?”” I asked.

She cried quietly.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

“Marcus.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You watched me lose my son.””

“I tried to help him.””

“You helped him hide.””

Her face twisted with guilt.

“I made one mistake.””

“One mistake?””

I stepped closer.

“My son spent over a year underground.””

She looked away.

“Marcus found Leo near the road.””

I froze.

“What?””

“The day he disappeared.””

The entire world became quiet.

Elena continued.

“He was driving home when he saw Leo after he ran away from the house.””

“Ran away?””

She nodded.

“Leo saw Marcus doing something.””

“What?””

She looked toward the officers.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You’re lying.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know Marcus had been stealing money from clients through his company. Leo saw documents. He saw him arguing with someone.””

My jaw tightened.

“So Marcus took him.””

Elena nodded.

“He said it was temporary.””

“Temporary?””

“He told me he needed time to fix everything.””

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I knew it was wrong.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

She covered her face.

“Because Marcus threatened Maya.””

My daughter.

I turned instantly toward the ambulance.

Maya was sitting beside Leo, holding his hand.

My anger became something colder.

A mother’s instinct.

A father’s fear.

“What did he say?””

Elena whispered:

“He said if I told anyone, he would make your daughter disappear too.””

Before I could respond, an officer ran out from the house.

“Mr. Carter!””

I turned.

His face told me something was wrong.

“What happened?””

“We found a recording device.””

“Where?””

“In the room under the floor.””

I walked closer.

The officer lowered his voice.

“Your sister wasn’t the only person listening down there.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

He held up a small recorder.

“We found hours of audio.””

“From when?””

The officer looked at the device.

“From the entire fourteen months Leo was missing.””

I felt sick.

“Play it.””

The officer hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

He pressed the button.

Static filled the air.

Then came Leo’s small voice.

“Please let me go home.””

My knees weakened.

Then Marcus answered.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

“Not until your father stops looking.””

My hands curled into fists.

Then another voice appeared.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

A woman’s voice.

She whispered:

“Marcus, this has gone too far.””

The officer stopped the recording.

Everyone stared at each other.

I looked at him.

“Who was that woman?””

He didn’t answer.

Because at that exact moment, his radio came alive.

“Officer Reynolds, we found something behind the second wall.””

A pause.

Then another voice crackled through.

“There’s evidence someone else was living under this house.””

My blood turned cold.

Because Leo had told me there was only one person with him.

Marcus.

But now I knew the truth.

May you like

Someone else had been down there.

And that person had been helping him keep my son hidden.
