Chapter 4: The Woman in the Recording
The first thing Leo asked me when we arrived at the hospital was whether I was angry with him.
That question broke something inside me.
My seven-year-old son was lying in a hospital bed with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders, his face pale under the fluorescent lights, and somehow he thought he had done something wrong.
I sat beside him and held his hand.
“Leo, look at me.””
His eyes slowly met mine.
“You did nothing wrong.””
“But I ran away.””
“You were scared.””
“I should have called you.””
My throat tightened.
“You were a little boy.””
He looked down at his fingers.
“I tried.””
“What do you mean?””
He swallowed.
“Marcus took my backpack. He took my tablet. He said nobody would believe me.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Why?””
Leo hesitated.
“Because he said Aunt Elena would tell everyone I was lying.””
My heart sank.
Elena.
My own sister.
The woman who had hugged me while I cried.
The woman who had watched me search every road and every forest.
A nurse entered the room and checked Leo’s temperature.
“He needs rest,” she said gently.
I nodded.
But before she left, Leo grabbed my hand.
“Daddy.””
“Yes?””
“Don’t let them take me back there.””
I looked at him.
“Never.””
The word came out before I even thought.
“Never again.””
Outside the hospital room, Detective Reynolds was waiting.
His expression told me the night was far from over.
“We found the woman from the recording.””
I stood immediately.
“Who?””
He looked at the floor for a moment.
“Her name is Claire Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing.
“Who is she?””
“She worked with Marcus.””
“Worked with him doing what?””
The detective handed me a folder.
Inside were financial records.
Company documents.
Emails.
My eyes moved quickly across the pages.
Marcus had been running a construction business.
The same business where several clients had reported missing money.
“He was stealing from people,” Reynolds explained.
“Claire was his accountant.””
I looked up.
“And she helped him?””
“We don’t know yet.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
The detective didn’t argue.
Instead, he showed me a photo.
A woman in her forties.
Dark hair.
Tired eyes.
“This is Claire.””
I stared at the picture.
“Where is she now?””
“That’s the problem.””
My stomach tightened.
“She disappeared two days after Leo went missing.””
Two days.
The same time everything changed.
I looked back through the hospital window at my son.
“How did Marcus get Leo?””
Reynolds sighed.
“We believe Leo saw something connected to the fraud. Marcus panicked.””
“He kidnapped him.””
“Yes.””
The word was simple.
Cold.
I walked away from the window.
“But why keep him under Elena’s house?””
The detective was quiet.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Because Elena’s house wasn’t the first place.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Leo was moved.””
“Moved from where?””
Reynolds opened another file.
“An abandoned property owned by Marcus’s company.””
I felt dizzy.
“How long was he there?””
“We’re still investigating.””
I looked down.
“Fourteen months.””
The detective nodded.
“But Daniel…”
His voice changed.
“There’s something else.””
I waited.
“The recordings from the hidden room show Marcus wasn’t always alone.””
I remembered the woman’s voice.
Claire.
“Claire.””
“Yes.””
“What did she do?””
“We’re trying to find out.””
I walked back into Leo’s room.
He was asleep.
For the first time in over a year, my son looked peaceful.
But I knew the truth.
Someone had stolen his childhood.
And someone was still hiding.
The next morning, Elena asked to see me.
I almost refused.
But I needed answers.
She sat across from me in the hospital waiting room.
She looked smaller.
Older.
Not like my sister.
Like someone carrying a secret too heavy to hold.
“Daniel…”
I held up my hand.
“Tell me everything.””
She looked down.
“I met Marcus ten years ago.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice shook.
“He wasn’t always like this.””
I said nothing.
“He became obsessed with money. With winning. With proving everyone wrong.””
“And you stayed.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She wiped her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.””
I leaned forward.
“Afraid of him?””
She nodded.
“But there’s something I never told you.””
“What?””
She took a deep breath.
“The night Leo disappeared…”
My entire body froze.
“What about it?””
“He wasn’t supposed to disappear.””
The room went silent.
“What does that mean?””
Elena looked at me.
“Marcus planned to take something from your house.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
She whispered:
“He wasn’t looking for Leo.””
A chill moved through me.
“He was looking for evidence.””
I stared at her.
“Then why did he take my son?””
Elena’s face went pale.
“Because Leo saw him.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Elena looked at the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The phone kept vibrating.
Finally, she whispered:
“It’s Claire.””
I grabbed the phone.
“Answer it.””
Elena hesitated.
Then she pressed the button.
A woman’s terrified voice came through.
“Daniel?””
I froze.
“How do you know my name?””
There was silence.
May you like
Then Claire whispered:
“Because I’m the reason your son is alive.””
