Chapter 4: The Document That Should Not Exist
I stared at the paper in my hands until the words stopped looking like words.
My name.
Daniel’s name.
Vanessa’s signature.
The room behind me was still full of whispers, but they sounded distant, like I was underwater.
“What is this?”” I asked.
Graham looked exhausted.
“I found it when I was looking for my phone in her purse.””
He swallowed.
“I thought it was another legal document. Vanessa told me she kept everything organized.””
I looked down again.
The document wasn’t long.
It didn’t need to be.
The first sentence was enough to make my hands shake.
*Agreement regarding Claire Bennett’s inheritance and asset transfer following Daniel Bennett’s disappearance.*
Disappearance.
Not death.
Disappearance.
My heart slammed against my chest.
“Graham…”
He looked at me.
“I didn’t know.””
I believed him.
Because the pain on his face wasn’t the pain of a guilty man.
It was the pain of someone realizing he had invited a stranger into his life.
I walked back into the ballroom.
Every eye followed me.
Vanessa stood near the stage, still wearing the white dress everyone had been admiring an hour earlier.
Now it looked like a costume.
“You’re lying,” she said.
Her voice was calmer than before.
That scared me more.
“You’re trying to ruin my wedding because you’ve always hated me.””
I looked at her.
“Why does this have Daniel’s name on it?””
For the first time, Vanessa had no answer.
The silence was louder than any confession.
My mother stepped forward.
“Claire, please.””
I turned toward her.
“Please what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Not here.””
I laughed softly.
“Not here?””
I pointed around the ballroom.
“Where should I ask why my husband’s name is on a document about my inheritance? At home? At Thanksgiving? After another three years?””
Several guests looked away.
They didn’t want to be involved.
But they also didn’t want to leave.
People always say they hate drama.
Until the truth starts unfolding in front of them.
Graham looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me the truth.””
She shook her head.
“Graham, you’re letting her manipulate you.””
“Am I?””
His voice was quiet.
“Because I just watched my wife break into my office and discuss taking my property.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re choosing her over me?””
Graham stared at her.
“I’m choosing reality.””
That was the first time I saw Vanessa lose control.
She stepped toward him.
“You have no idea what she’s capable of.””
I froze.
Because that was exactly the kind of sentence people said when they were hiding something.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“You really want to know?””
My mother whispered, “Vanessa, stop.””
But she continued.
“Your precious Daniel wasn’t perfect, Claire.””
My jaw tightened.
“Don’t talk about him.””
“Why? Because you made him into some hero after he died?””
She stepped closer.
“He lied to you.””
The room went quiet again.
I felt Lily grab my hand.
“Mommy?””
I looked down.
She was scared.
I forced myself to breathe.
“What did Daniel lie about?””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“There it is.””
Her expression changed.
“You always believed everyone else before you believed me.””
“No,” I said.
My voice was shaking.
“I believed you until you gave me reasons not to.””
She looked away.
Then Graham’s phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
He answered.
“Hello?””
Everyone watched him listen.
Then his expression became serious.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
“Send it to me now.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“That was my private investigator.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“What investigator?””
Graham ignored her.
“He found something.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
He looked at the wedding guests.
Then at Vanessa.
“The person who uploaded the original security footage from my office wasn’t Lily.””
Vanessa stopped breathing.
“What are you talking about?””
Graham looked directly at her.
“The video was copied three months ago.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Three months.
Before this wedding.
Before tonight.
Someone had known.
Someone had been waiting.
Graham turned his phone around.
There was a photo on the screen.
A security camera image.
A person standing outside his office.
A person holding a flash drive.
I stared at the blurry face.
Because I recognized the coat.
I recognized the posture.
And then Graham said the words that made everyone turn toward the entrance.
“The person who sent me the evidence…”
May you like
He looked at me.
“Was Daniel.””
