Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Accident
No one moved.
The wedding ballroom that had been filled with music and laughter became the quietest place I had ever been.
The video continued playing on the giant screen.
My mother stood inside Graham’s office, holding a folder with both hands.
The same woman who had comforted me after Daniel’s death.
The same woman who hugged me at the funeral and told me everything would be okay.
She was now standing beside Vanessa, discussing my husband’s death like it was a business problem.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Turn it off,” my mother whispered.
Nobody listened.
Vanessa looked around desperately.
“Graham, this is insane. Someone edited this.””
Graham didn’t look at her.
His eyes stayed fixed on the screen.
“Why were you in my office?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I wasn’t.””
The video showed her clearly.
Her hand opening his desk.
Her voice saying the words.
Once we’re married, he’ll sign everything over.
A guest near the back whispered, “What is happening?””
Another replied, “That’s his office.””
I looked at Lily.
She was standing beside me, holding the microphone with both hands.
She looked tiny in that enormous ballroom.
But somehow, she was the strongest person there.
I knelt beside her.
“Lily, sweetheart, where did you get this video?””
She looked at me.
“I found it on Aunt Vanessa’s tablet.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She lowered her voice.
“She left it open when I was looking for a game.””
Vanessa heard her.
“You went through my things?””
Her voice was sharp.
Lily stepped back.
I immediately moved closer.
“Don’t speak to her like that.””
Vanessa pointed at my daughter.
“She stole private information.””
“No,” Lily said quietly.
The entire room looked at her.
“I saved it because I knew nobody would believe me.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.
For years, people had treated Lily like she was invisible.
Like children didn’t notice anything.
Like children didn’t understand pain.
Graham finally turned away from the screen.
“Vanessa.””
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“What exactly was my property supposed to be?””
Vanessa walked toward him.
“Graham, please. You know how families are. Claire is jealous.””
I stared at her.
“Jealous?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
Her expression hardened.
“You always wanted what I had.””
I laughed once.
I couldn’t believe it.
“My husband died.””
The room went silent.
“You got married. I buried someone.””
Vanessa looked away.
But then my mother stepped forward.
“Claire, stop making a scene.””
I turned toward her slowly.
“A scene?””
My voice shook.
“You’re standing here after hiding something about Daniel’s death, and you’re worried about a scene?””
My mother’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Graham saw it too.
“What does she mean?””
Nobody answered.
The video ended.
The screen went black.
But the damage was done.
Graham walked toward the DJ.
“Can you replay the part with the conversation?””
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Graham, don’t.””
He looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Why?””
She released him.
The DJ restarted the video.
This time everyone listened carefully.
The camera angle changed.
Vanessa was sitting at Graham’s desk.
My mother was standing beside her.
“Once we’re married, he’ll sign everything over,” Vanessa said.
My mother looked nervous.
“What about Claire?””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Claire won’t understand anything. She never has.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Then my mother said something that made my knees weak.
“And the police report?””
Vanessa smiled.
“I told you. She thinks Daniel fell asleep while driving.””
A cold wave moved through me.
I grabbed the back of a chair.
Daniel.
My husband.
My daughter’s father.
The man who used to sing badly while cooking breakfast.
The man who kissed Lily’s forehead every night.
I looked at my mother.
“Mom…”
She couldn’t meet my eyes.
Graham stared at her.
“You knew?””
My mother whispered, “It wasn’t what you think.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me what it was.””
She said nothing.
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
“Enough!””
Everyone jumped.
She grabbed the microphone from my daughter’s hand.
“You don’t know what you’re doing, Claire.””
I stared at her.
“You’re right.””
I wiped my tears.
“I don’t know why my own family destroyed my life.””
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“You think you’re the victim?””
She laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what Daniel was hiding.””
My blood froze.
“What did you say?””
Graham looked at Vanessa.
“Careful.””
But she was already losing control.
“Tell her, Mom.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Vanessa…”
“Tell her!””
The room waited.
My mother slowly looked at me.
And then she said the sentence that made the entire world tilt.
“Daniel wasn’t killed because of an accident.””
I couldn’t move.
“What?””
My mother’s hands trembled.
“The police report was changed.””
Someone gasped.
Graham stepped forward.
“Who changed it?””
My mother looked at Vanessa.
Then she looked back at me.
“I did.””
And before I could ask why, my phone started ringing.
May you like
The name on the screen was one I hadn’t seen in three years.
Daniel.
