Chapter 11: The Man Behind The Family Lies
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to ask him how he could disappear and let his daughter believe he was dead.
But when my father looked at me, I saw something I never expected.
Regret.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Regret.
And somehow, that hurt more.
“You’re alive,” I whispered.
He nodded.
“I am.””
My voice shook.
“Do you know what I went through?””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I laughed bitterly.
“No, you don’t.””
“I do.””
“How?””
He looked down.
“Because I watched.””
The words made my stomach turn.
“You watched?””
My father swallowed.
“I watched you grow up. I watched Daniel love you. I watched Lily being born.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You watched?””
I stepped closer.
“You watched me cry at your funeral.””
His face collapsed.
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you come back?””
Silence.
The detective stood nearby, letting me have the answers I had spent years needing.
Finally, my father spoke.
“Because your mother convinced me I had to disappear.””
I stared.
“What?””
He looked at Daniel.
“She told me if I came back, Vanessa would destroy Claire.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She used you.””
My father nodded.
“I know that now.””
I looked around the storage unit.
“So all of this…”
I pointed at the boxes.
“You were hiding?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He took a deep breath.
“Because I found out the truth about my own family.””
Nobody spoke.
He opened one of the boxes.
Inside were old financial records.
“Years ago, I discovered Vanessa wasn’t my biological daughter.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
My father looked at the papers.
“Your mother had an affair before Vanessa was born.””
The world seemed to tilt.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at the documents.
“No.””
My father nodded.
“She spent years trying to hide it.””
I felt sick.
“So Vanessa knew?””
“Yes.””
“And that’s why she hated me?””
My father looked at me sadly.
“Vanessa believed you were the only child I truly loved because you were mine.””
The words hurt.
Because suddenly Vanessa’s anger made sense.
Not justified.
Never justified.
But understandable.
My father continued.
“She found out I planned to change my will.””
“To give me the company?””
“To give you both a fair share.””
I looked away.
All those years.
All that hatred.
All because people refused to tell the truth.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Why the accident?””
My father became serious.
“Because Daniel discovered everything.””
Daniel nodded.
“He found the records.””
“Yes.””
My father looked at him.
“And Vanessa knew you would expose her.””
I stepped back.
“So Vanessa tried to kill Daniel?””
My father’s silence answered.
“But she failed.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Who was driving the second car?””
My father’s expression changed.
“I don’t know.””
The detective interrupted.
“But you know who helped her.””
My father looked away.
That hesitation told us everything.
“Who?””
He closed his eyes.
“Someone who worked with Vanessa.””
“Who?””
My father looked directly at me.
“The person who has been pretending to help you since Daniel disappeared.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
He whispered the name.
And my entire body went numb.
“My mother.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She wasn’t just covering it up.””
My father reached into another box.
He pulled out a letter.
“She planned the cover-up.””
Daniel took the letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What does it say?””
Daniel handed it to me.
It was a letter from my mother.
To Vanessa.
The first line was enough.
*If Claire ever finds out Daniel survived, we need to make sure she never reaches him.*
My hands shook.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who held me after Daniel died.
The woman who told me to move on.
She had been afraid of one thing.
Not losing me.
Losing control.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
*You found your father. Now find out what happened to Lily.*
I looked up.
My heart stopped.
Because the message included a photograph.
A photograph of Lily.

Taken that night.
At the wedding.
