Chapter 3: The Call From A Dead Man

For three years, I had dreamed about seeing Daniel’s name appear on my phone again.

I imagined it happening in a thousand different ways.

I imagined waking up from a nightmare.

I imagined finding an old voicemail.

I imagined hearing his voice in my memories.

But never like this.

Never while standing in the middle of my sister’s wedding.

Never with my mother admitting she changed the police report about his death.

My phone kept ringing.

Daniel’s name stayed on the screen.

Everyone around me stared.

Nobody spoke.

Then Graham whispered, “Claire…”

I couldn’t answer.

My hands were shaking too badly.

Lily looked up at me.

“Mommy, is Daddy calling?””

That question almost destroyed me.

Because children believe impossible things.

And sometimes adults spend years trying to convince them that miracles aren’t real.

I pressed the answer button.

The ballroom was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

“Claire?””

I dropped the phone.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it better than my own.

“Daniel?””

A hundred people watched as I picked up the phone again.

“Daniel, where are you?””

The voice on the other end became strained.

“Claire, listen to me. You don’t have much time.””

My knees nearly gave out.

“You’re alive?””

A long silence followed.

Then he said:

“Yes.””

The entire room erupted.

People whispered.

Someone dropped a glass.

Vanessa’s face turned completely white.

My mother covered her mouth.

Graham looked between me and Vanessa like he was trying to understand a nightmare.

I walked away from the crowd.

“Daniel, I thought you died.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you call me?””

His breathing changed.

Like he had been waiting years to hear that question.

“Because I couldn’t.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

Not shocked.

Terrified.

“Daniel,” I whispered, “what happened?””

His voice lowered.

“Your sister happened.””

The words cut through me.

I closed my eyes.

“No.””

“I wish it wasn’t true.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“Don’t listen to him.””

I held the phone tighter.

“Why?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Because he’s lying.””

Daniel answered before I could.

“She’s there, isn’t she?””

My heart stopped.

“How did you know?””

“Because she was always the problem.””

I walked outside the ballroom doors.

The cold Newport air hit my face.

The garden lights blurred through my tears.

“Daniel, tell me everything.””

He was silent for a moment.

Then he said, “The night of the accident wasn’t an accident.””

I already knew.

But hearing it from him felt different.

“I discovered Vanessa was using my company accounts to move money.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

“She knew I found out. She thought if I disappeared, she could take control.””

My stomach twisted.

“And Mom?””

Daniel sighed.

“She helped cover it up.””

I looked through the glass doors.

My mother was standing alone.

Her shoulders were shaking.

“Why would she do that?””

“Because Vanessa convinced her that you were better off without me.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not because Daniel was gone.

Because for years, I had mourned him while the people closest to me knew the truth.

“Where have you been?””

“I tried to come back.””

His voice cracked.

“But Vanessa made sure I couldn’t.””

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Graham stood there.

He looked different now.

Not like a groom.

Like a man who had just discovered his entire marriage was built on lies.

“Claire,” he said quietly.

I lowered the phone.

“What?””

He held out a piece of paper.

“I found this in Vanessa’s purse.””

My fingers went cold before I even touched it.

It was a document.

A legal agreement.

With my sister’s signature.

And my name written at the top.

Graham looked at me.

“She planned this wedding before she ever loved me.””

I unfolded the paper.

The first line made my blood run cold.

It wasn’t a marriage agreement.

It was a confession.

May you like

And at the bottom was a name I never expected to see.

Daniel’s.
