Chapter 12: The Threat Against My Daughter
I forgot how to breathe.
The photograph was only a few seconds old.
Lily was standing outside the hotel entrance with the family friend who was watching her.
She was smiling.
Holding her drawing.
Completely unaware.
My hands started shaking.
“Claire?””
Daniel saw my face.
“What happened?””
I turned the phone around.
The moment he saw the picture, his expression changed.
“Where is she?””
I was already running.
We rushed back toward the main building.
Every step felt too slow.
Every second felt dangerous.
“Lily!””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
The family friend turned.
“She’s right here.””
Relief hit me so hard my knees almost collapsed.
Lily was sitting on the floor near the lobby table, coloring.
She looked up.
“Mommy?””
I ran to her.
I grabbed her and held her tightly.
She laughed softly.
“Mommy, you’re squeezing me.””
I didn’t let go.
Because for the first time in years, I understood something.
The person who wanted to hurt me had found the one thing I would never survive losing.
My daughter.
Daniel crouched beside us.
“Lily, sweetheart, did anyone talk to you?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Did anyone give you anything?””
“No.””
I looked around the lobby.
Nothing.
No Vanessa.
No mother.
No stranger.
But someone had been close enough to take that picture.
Detective Harris arrived moments later.
He looked at the phone.
“This is a threat.””
“No kidding,” Daniel said.
The detective ignored the anger.
“Who has access to your family?””
I looked at him.
I didn’t want to say it.
But I knew.
“My mother.””
Daniel looked at me.
“And Vanessa.””
The detective nodded.
“We need to find them.””
A hotel employee approached nervously.
“Excuse me?””
We turned.
“Yes?””
“There was someone asking about the little girl.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
The employee looked uncertain.
“A woman.””
“What woman?””
She described her.
My mother.
I felt betrayed all over again.
The detective immediately moved.
“Where did she go?””
The employee pointed.
“She left through the parking garage.””
We ran.
But she was gone.
Only her car remained.
The driver’s door was open.
Inside was a purse.
My mother’s purse.
Detective Harris searched carefully.
Then he found something.
A small envelope.
My name was written on it.
Claire.
I stared at it.
“What is this?””
The detective handed it to me.
“You decide.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
My hands trembled as I read.
*Claire,*
*If you are reading this, then Vanessa failed to stop the truth from coming out.*
I looked at Daniel.
Then continued.
*I know you hate me. You should. I made choices I can never undo.*
My eyes burned.
*But there is something you need to know. Vanessa was never the person controlling everything.*
I stopped.
Another name.
Another secret.
*Someone else has been using Vanessa’s anger for years.*
My heart tightened.
The letter continued.
*The person who ordered Daniel’s disappearance is the same person who destroyed our family.*
I turned the page.
The final sentence made my hands go numb.
*Claire, your husband’s accident was not meant to kill Daniel. It was meant to kill you.*
I dropped the letter.
Daniel caught it.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“They weren’t trying to remove you.””
My voice broke.
“They were trying to remove me.””
The detective picked up the letter.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked at us.
“We found Vanessa.””
“Where?””
His expression became grim.
“She’s at the airport.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Running?””
Detective Harris shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“She called emergency services.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
He hesitated.
“Because she claims she knows who has been controlling everything.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
The detective looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“Vanessa said the person behind this entire plan…”
May you like
He paused.
“…is someone who has been dead for twenty years.””
