Chapter 8: The Plan to Take My Daughter

I read the email three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I couldn’t accept them.

Megan had written everything down.

Every complaint.

Every accusation.

Every twisted version of reality.

She had been building a case against me.

For months.

Rachel sat across from me at the kitchen table.

“I didn’t know what to do.””

I looked up.

“You knew about this?””

She shook her head quickly.

“Not at first.””

“When did you find out?””

“When Megan asked me to write a statement.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“A statement saying what?””

Rachel looked embarrassed.

“That you were unstable.””

The room went silent.

Zoe stared at her.

“Excuse me?””

Rachel looked down.

“She said you were obsessed with Lily. That you didn’t let anyone else make decisions. That you were damaging your marriage.””

I felt my chest tighten.

The irony was almost painful.

I had spent years trying to make sure Lily felt loved.

And Megan had been collecting evidence against me for loving her too much.

“She wanted you to sign something?”” I asked.

Rachel nodded.

“She said if enough family members agreed, Mark would finally understand that Lily needed ‘a more balanced environment.’”

I looked at Mark.

He was standing near the doorway.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

“Did you know about this?””

His face changed.

Just slightly.

That was enough.

“Mark.””

He looked at me.

“I knew she was upset.””

“Did you know she wanted to take my daughter?””

“No.””

The answer came fast.

Too fast.

Rachel spoke softly.

“She told me she already talked to a lawyer.””

My blood ran cold.

I turned back to Mark.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew something.””

“I thought she was just angry.””

I stood.

“How many times are you going to use that excuse?””

He flinched.

“You always say you’re trying to keep the peace.””

My voice lowered.

“But every time you protect peace, someone gets hurt.””

Mark looked devastated.

Good.

For the first time, I wanted him to feel something close to what Lily felt.

Confusion.

Fear.

Betrayal.

Rachel reached into the folder again.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

“What else?””

She hesitated.

“Megan wasn’t only collecting statements.””

“What was she doing?””

“She was recording Lily.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

Rachel looked at Mark.

Then at me.

“She wanted Lily to say things that could be used against you.””

The room went completely still.

A child.

My child.

Had been turned into evidence.

I looked toward the stairs.

Suddenly all I wanted was to hold Lily.

To tell her she never had to choose sides.

Never had to protect adults.

Never had to keep secrets.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice responded.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“This is Daniel Brooks.””

I froze.

“Who?””

“I’m an attorney.””

My grip tightened.

“Why are you calling me?””

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“Because your father-in-law hired me before he died.””

I looked at Zoe.

She immediately understood.

“About what?””

The lawyer sighed.

“About protecting your daughter.””

I closed my eyes.

“From who?””

Another pause.

Then:

“From your husband’s family.””

My heart sank.

I looked at Mark.

He looked away.

The lawyer continued.

“Mr. Brooks left instructions that I was only to contact you after a specific event occurred.””

“What event?””

His answer was quiet.

“Your daughter being physically harmed.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because Daniel had known.

He had predicted this.

The lawyer continued.

“Mrs. Carter, there is something you need to know.””

“What?””

“Your father-in-law didn’t just leave you evidence.””

My fingers went cold.

“What did he leave?””

“A legal document.””

“About what?””

The lawyer paused.

May you like

Then said:

“Your daughter’s custody.””
