Chapter 10: The Witness Who Chose the Wrong Side

The officer’s words echoed through the house.

“Your husband is listed as a witness.””

I looked at Mark.

Not at the officer.

Not at the papers in his hand.

At Mark.

Because somehow, that hurt more than the report itself.

Megan had lied before.

Carol had protected her before.

But Mark?

Mark was the person who had promised me he would stand beside me.

The officer cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Carter, I need to ask you a few questions about what happened at Thanksgiving.””

I nodded slowly.

“Of course.””

Mark stepped forward.

“Can I explain?””

The officer looked at him.

“You’re listed as a witness, sir. I’ll speak with you separately.””

Mark’s face tightened.

“But I’m her husband.””

The officer didn’t react.

“That doesn’t change the process.””

I almost laughed.

The process.

Funny how everyone cared about procedures after ignoring the child in the room.

The officer asked me to sit.

David Brooks stayed nearby but didn’t interfere.

He only watched.

Carefully.

Like he was waiting to see what kind of person I would become under pressure.

I answered every question.

I told the truth.

Megan slapped Lily.

I reacted.

I regretted reacting that way.

But I would never regret protecting my daughter.

When the officer finished, he closed his notebook.

“Mrs. Carter, Megan’s report claims you attacked her without provocation.””

I nodded.

“She left out what happened first.””

“She also claims you have been emotionally unstable.””

I looked at Mark.

He looked down.

There it was.

The part that hurt.

Not because Megan said it.

Because someone gave her the material.

Someone fed the story.

The officer continued.

“Did you know your sister-in-law had concerns about your parenting?””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because those concerns were never about my parenting.””

“What were they about?””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Her wanting control over my daughter.””

The officer wrote something down.

Then he stood.

“I’ll need statements from everyone involved.””

His eyes moved between me and Mark.

“Especially you, Mr. Carter.””

After he left, the house became painfully quiet.

Mark closed the door.

“Chloe.””

I didn’t answer.

“Please.””

I turned around.

“Are you going to tell the truth?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“Are you going to tell him what happened?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I need to think.””

I stared at him.

“You need to think?””

“Yes.””

“About whether your daughter deserves the truth?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“About what this will do to my family.””

The sentence was so familiar.

I almost expected it.

Almost.

But hearing it again made something inside me finally disappear.

“You still don’t understand.””

He looked hurt.

“I’m trying.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re trying to avoid consequences.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I pointed toward the stairs.

“Was it fair to Lily?””

He had no answer.

David quietly gathered his documents.

“I’ll contact you tomorrow regarding the legal steps.””

After he left, Zoe came back with Lily.

The second my daughter saw me, she ran.

“Mommy!””

I dropped to my knees and hugged her.

She smelled like strawberries and crayons.

A normal child.

A child who should never have been involved in any of this.

“I missed you,” she whispered.

“I missed you too.””

She pulled back.

“Is Daddy mad at me?””

My heart shattered.

“No, baby.””

She looked toward Mark.

Then back at me.

“Daddy doesn’t like when I tell secrets.””

I froze.

“What secrets?””

Lily looked confused.

“The ones Aunt Megan told me not to tell.””

I felt my blood run cold.

I lowered myself to her level.

“Sweetheart, can I ask you something?””

She nodded.

“Did Aunt Megan ever ask you to hide things from Mommy?””

Lily looked down.

A small movement.

But I saw it.

“Yes.””

Zoe covered her mouth.

“What things?””

Lily twisted her fingers.

“She said Mommy gets upset.””

I swallowed.

“What did she ask you to hide?””

Lily whispered:

“When Daddy came to Grandma’s house and told Aunt Megan she could take me away.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Mark.

His face lost all color.

“Lily…”

She looked at him.

“I wasn’t supposed to say.””

And then she started crying.

Not because she had done something wrong.

Because she thought she had.

I pulled her close.

“It’s okay.””

“But Daddy said—”

“No.””

I held her tighter.

“Listen to me.””

Her eyes met mine.

“You never have to keep a secret that makes you feel scared.””

Behind her, Mark looked like he had been hit.

But for once, I didn’t care about his pain.

Because my daughter’s pain had been there first.

That night, after Lily fell asleep, I found something on my phone.

A message from Megan.

A photograph was attached.

It was a picture of Lily sleeping at Grandma’s house.

Taken without my knowledge.

The message said:

*You should have stayed quiet. Now everyone will see what kind of mother you really are.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

From Mark.

*Please don’t make me choose.*

I looked at both messages.

May you like

And I finally understood.

He had already chosen.
