Chapter 14: The Person Who Claimed to Save Me
I read the name again.
Then again.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
Rachel.
Megan’s former friend.
The woman who came to my house.
The woman who handed me the folder.
The woman who claimed she wanted to help.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
David looked at me.
“I know it’s difficult.””
“No.””
I pushed the papers away.
“She was helping me.””
David didn’t argue.
“She was.””
That made me look up.
“What?””
“She was helping you.””
“Then why is her name here?””
David tapped the file.
“Because she was involved before she changed sides.””
My stomach turned.
“How involved?””
He opened another document.
“Rachel helped Megan create the original narrative.””
I stared.
“The original narrative?””
“That you were unstable. That you were controlling. That Lily was overly attached to you.””
I felt sick.
“But she came to me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
David leaned back.
“Because she realized Megan went too far.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It doesn’t.””
That afternoon, I called Rachel.
She answered quickly.
“Chloe?””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Silence.
Then:
“You found out.””
“Yes.””
“About the statements?””
“About everything.””
A long pause.
Then Rachel whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed softly.
“You’re sorry?””
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
I looked out the window.
“You made choices.””
She started crying.
“I was scared of Megan.””
“So you helped her hurt my daughter?””
“No.””
“Yes.””
The truth sounded harsh.
But it needed to.
“You sat there while she built a case against me.””
“I thought she was just trying to scare you.””
“She was trying to take my child.””
“I know.””
The words broke something in me.
“You know?””
“I know now.””
I closed my eyes.
Because everyone always knew after.
After the damage.
After the tears.
After Lily was hurt.
Rachel continued.
“I have proof.””
I hesitated.
“Proof?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
“A recording.””
My heart sank.
“Of what?””
“Megan and Carol.””
“When?””
“The day after Thanksgiving.””
I sat up.
“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””
“Because I was afraid.””
I almost ended the call.
Then I remembered something Daniel wrote.
Frightened people can cause damage.
That didn’t excuse them.
But it explained them.
“Send it.””
A few minutes later, the recording arrived.
I played it.
Megan’s voice came first.
“She thinks she won.””
Carol laughed.
“She always was dramatic.””
Then Rachel’s voice.
“You went too far.””
Megan answered:
“No. I did exactly what needed to be done.””
My hands tightened.
Carol asked:
“What about the report?””
Megan replied:
“Mark will support us.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
Then Carol said:
“And if he doesn’t?””
A pause.
Megan laughed.
“He will. He always chooses us.””
The recording ended.
I sat there silently.
Because that was the sentence.
The one that explained everything.
He always chooses us.
Not Lily.
Not me.
Them.
That evening, Mark came to see Lily.
I watched from the doorway.
He sat on the floor with her and helped her color.
For a few minutes, he looked like the father I remembered.
Then Lily looked up.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Why did you let Aunt Megan be mean to me?””
Mark froze.
I looked away.
This was his moment.
No lawyers.
No family.
No excuses.
Just his daughter.
He took a breath.
“I was wrong.””
Lily studied him.
“Why?””
Because children ask the hardest questions.
Mark wiped his eyes.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
He swallowed.
“Of making people angry.””
Lily looked confused.
“But you’re my daddy.””
I watched him break.
Because she didn’t understand.
She shouldn’t have to.
“You’re supposed to protect me.””
Mark covered his face.
“I know.””
That night, after he left, I received another call.
David.
His voice was urgent.
“Chloe.””
“What happened?””
“We found the original custody documents.””
“And?””
“They were changed.””
My heart stopped.
“Changed by who?””
He paused.
Then said:
“The person who signed them wasn’t Megan.””
I waited.
“Who was it?””
May you like
David’s answer came quietly.
“Mark.””
