Chapter 2: The Recording He Tried to Hide

I didn’t drive.

I couldn’t.

The engine was running, the heater was blowing warm air against my hands, and Lily was sitting quietly in the back seat hugging her stuffed rabbit.

But I couldn’t move.

Not after Zoe said those words.

The recording.

Mark begged her never to let me hear.

I stared at my phone.

“What recording?”” I asked.

Zoe didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

“Zoe.””

“I’m coming,” she said.

“No. Tell me now.””

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered, “It’s from last month.””

My grip tightened around the steering wheel.

“Last month when?””

“The night you thought Mark was working late.””

My chest tightened.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Zoe, what are you talking about?””

“I found it because I was helping Mom clean out old files from her laptop.””

My stomach dropped.

My mother had passed away two years earlier. Anything connected to her still felt impossible to touch.

“What does Mom have to do with this?””

“I’ll explain when I get there.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me.””

Before Zoe could answer, Lily spoke from the back seat.

“Mommy?””

I turned around.

Her face was pressed against the window.

“Is Aunt Megan mad at me?””

My heart broke all over again.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But I touched the turkey.””

I closed my eyes.

“You were hungry.””

“But Aunt Megan said I was bad.””

I looked at my daughter in the mirror.

The little girl who used to sing loudly in the grocery store.

The little girl who believed every adult had a good heart.

Someone had made her question herself.

And my husband had watched.

“You are not bad,” I told her.

“Okay.””

But she didn’t sound convinced.

Twenty minutes later, Zoe pulled into the parking lot.

She jumped out before her car fully stopped.

That was always Zoe.

Even when we were kids, she moved like every second mattered.

She climbed into my passenger seat holding a small envelope.

Her face was pale.

“Chloe.””

“What is it?””

She looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Can Lily stay with me for a minute?””

“No.””

The answer came too fast.

I didn’t mean it.

I just couldn’t handle one more person taking my daughter away from me.

Zoe softened.

“I’m not taking her away.””

She reached into the back seat.

“Hey, Lily. Want to help me find snacks in my car?””

Lily nodded slowly.

When they walked away, Zoe handed me the envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

I stared at it.

“What is this?””

“A copy.””

“Of what?””

Zoe swallowed.

“Of Mark talking to Megan.””

My fingers went cold.

“About what?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“About Lily.””

I plugged the flash drive into my laptop.

The screen lit up.

A single audio file appeared.

October 17.

I clicked play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Mark’s voice.

“I’m telling you, Megan, you have to stop.””

I froze.

Zoe watched me carefully.

Then Megan’s voice came through.

“Stop what?””

“Calling her stupid.””

My breath caught.

“She’s a child.””

“She’s annoying, Mark.””

The recording continued.

“She acts like Chloe’s little princess.””

My hands started shaking.

Mark sighed.

“Megan.””

“No, seriously. You and Chloe let that kid get away with everything.””

“She’s five.””

“She needs discipline.””

A horrible feeling crawled up my spine.

Because I recognized the room.

The background noise.

The faint music.

This wasn’t old.

This was from our house.

The recording continued.

Megan laughed.

“One day I’m going to teach her manners myself.””

Mark’s voice became sharper.

“You don’t touch her.””

There was a pause.

Then Megan said something that made my blood run cold.

“What are you going to do? Tell Chloe?””

Silence.

Then Mark answered.

“No.””

I stopped breathing.

“No?””

“No. Because she’ll overreact.””

The audio ended.

I stared at the screen.

That was it.

A few minutes.

A few sentences.

But it changed everything.

Zoe touched my arm.

“Chloe.””

I pulled away.

“He knew.””

“I know.””

“He knew she talked like that about Lily.””

“I know.””

“He knew Megan was angry with her.””

“I know.””

I covered my mouth.

The worst part wasn’t just that Megan hurt my daughter.

It was that Mark had already seen the warning signs.

He knew.

And he still brought Lily into that house.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Mark.

I stared at his name.

Then another notification appeared.

A text message.

From him.

*You need to come back and fix what you caused. My family is furious.*

I looked at Zoe.

She had read my face.

“What did he say?””

I turned the phone toward her.

Zoe’s expression changed.

Not sadness.

Anger.

Then another message appeared.

This time from Megan.

*If you tell anyone about tonight, I’ll make sure everyone knows what kind of mother you really are.*

I felt something inside me go completely still.

Because I finally understood.

Thanksgiving wasn’t the first time Megan crossed a line.

It was just the first time she got caught.

And then Zoe whispered the one thing that made me realize the recording wasn’t the worst secret Mark had hidden.

“Chloe…”

May you like

I looked at her.

“There’s another file.””
