Chapter 5: The Night My Father Disappeared

I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.

Daniel stood beside my father beneath the security lights outside Carter Industries. Dad wore the gray suit he had been buried in—or the suit I had been told was his.

Daniel looked directly at the camera.

He wasn't smiling.

The date on the back was seven years old.

"Tell me he's lying," I said.

My brother stared at me.

"Ethan, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

He looked around at the guests, many of whom were now openly recording us on their phones.

"Not here.""

I laughed once, without humor.

"You had no problem discussing my company here. You had no problem letting three hundred people believe I was marrying a woman who loved me. You had no problem standing in the front row while I mourned a father you apparently knew was alive.""

I stepped closer.

"So explain it here.""

Daniel's eyes flicked toward Dad.

"He told you he disappeared because someone wanted him dead. Did he tell you what he did to our family before that?""

Dad's jaw tightened.

"Daniel, don't.""

"Why not? You want everyone to know the truth? Let's tell them everything.""

He turned toward the guests.

"My father wasn't the saint Ethan thinks he was. He controlled every decision. Every dollar.

Every opportunity. When I tried to start my own investment firm, he refused to support it.""

Dad answered calmly.

"I refused to finance a business built on money you couldn't account for.""

"Because you didn't trust me!""

"Because I found the missing money.""

Daniel slammed his hand against his chest.

"I borrowed it! I intended to repay every cent!""

"With what?"" Dad asked.

"Money from the company you were trying to acquire?""

Daniel's silence was answer enough.

I felt sick.

For years, I had believed our family fell apart because of an accident. I had blamed fate, bad weather, and the cruel randomness of life.

Now I was learning that the accident might have been the final act of something that began inside our own family.

Robert moved beside me.

"Ethan, we should separate everyone and wait for the police.""

"Not yet.""

He lowered his voice.

"Your father has evidence, but we need to preserve it properly.""

I looked at Dad.

"Tell me what happened that night.""

Dad took a slow breath.

"I found records connecting Daniel's company to unauthorized transfers from one of my investment accounts. I confronted him in my office. He admitted taking the money, but he insisted it was temporary.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You left out the part where you threatened to destroy me.""

"I told you I'd report the theft.""

"You were going to put your own son in prison!""

"You were stealing from your family.""

Daniel turned away, breathing hard.

Dad continued.

"That night, I left the office alone. At least, I believed I was alone. Someone followed me. Later, my car was found near the water, and investigators concluded that I had driven off the road.""

"Why didn't they find your body?"" I asked.

"They found debris and personal belongings. The water was deep, and the weather was terrible. Eventually, the authorities declared me dead.""

"That doesn't explain why you stayed away.""

His expression changed.

"No. It doesn't.""

For the first time, my father looked ashamed.

"After the accident, I was injured and disoriented. A fisherman found me several miles from where my car went into the water. I was taken to a small hospital under a different name because I feared whoever had arranged the accident would come looking for me.""

I stared at him.

"How long were you in the hospital?""

"Nearly three months.""

"And after that?""

"I contacted an old business associate. He helped me establish a new identity while I investigated what had happened.""

My throat tightened.

"You could have called me.""

"Yes.""

"You could have sent a letter.""

"Yes.""

"You could have told me you were alive!""

His eyes filled with tears.

"Yes, Ethan. I could have.""

The simplicity of his answer hurt more than an excuse would have.

"Then why didn't you?""

Dad looked down at his walking stick.

"Because I received a photograph of you leaving your office. There was a message attached. It said that if I contacted either of my sons, the next accident wouldn't be an accident.""

I stopped breathing.

He reached into the envelope and handed Robert a smaller photograph.

It showed me stepping into my car outside Carter Industries. A red circle had been drawn around my face.

On the back was a handwritten warning.

*ONE SON WAS ENOUGH. DON'T MAKE US CHOOSE THE OTHER.*

Robert examined it carefully.

"Did you report this?""

"I couldn't risk it. I didn't know who I could trust. The people behind the scheme had access to confidential records, and I suspected someone inside the company was helping them.""

"Why come back now?"" I asked.

Dad looked toward Vanessa and Daniel.

"Because the money has started moving again. And because the people who wanted me gone are preparing to take control of everything I left behind.""

Daniel suddenly laughed.

"You expect us to believe all this? A mysterious fisherman, a secret identity, threats written on photographs? You disappear for seven years and expect everyone to accept your story because you walked into a wedding?""

Dad didn't argue.

Instead, he removed a small device from the envelope and placed it in Robert's hand.

"There's an audio recording from the night I confronted Daniel.""

Daniel stopped laughing.

Robert looked at the device.

"Is this an original recording?""

"Yes. I kept it because I didn't know when I might need it.""

Daniel lunged toward them.

"Give me that!""

A security guard caught his arm before he could reach Robert.

"Sir, step back.""

"That's mine!"" Daniel shouted.

Dad's expression hardened.

"No, son. It never was.""

Robert slipped the device into a protective evidence pouch.

"Richard, if this recording contains what you say it does, the authorities need to hear it.""

"They will.""

My father looked at me.

"But there's something you need to understand before you listen.""

"What?""

"The person who helped me survive wasn't just a business associate. He was someone who knew Daniel's plans before I did.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Dad glanced at the ballroom doors.

Before he could answer, a woman in a dark blue suit entered with two uniformed police officers.

She approached Robert, showed him an identification card, and asked everyone to remain where they were.

"I'm Detective Morgan," she announced.

"We've received a report concerning suspected financial fraud and possible identity theft.""

Daniel began protesting immediately.

"This is a wedding! You can't arrest people based on a family argument!""

Detective Morgan looked at him.

"We haven't arrested anyone, Mr. Carter. Yet.""

She turned to my father.

"Mr. Richard Carter?""

Dad nodded.

"We need to discuss your identity and the circumstances surrounding your reported death.""

"I expected that.""

As she led him toward a quieter corner, my father suddenly stopped and turned back to me.

"Ethan, one more thing.""

I approached him.

"What is it?""

He glanced at Daniel, then at Vanessa.

"The money wasn't the real reason they wanted you to marry her.""

My stomach tightened.

"Then what was?""

Dad lowered his voice.

"Six months before I disappeared, I created a document that would change who controlled Carter Industries if anything happened to me.""

Robert looked up sharply.

"Richard, you told me that document was destroyed.""

"I told you I believed it was destroyed.""

Dad reached into his coat and removed a folded piece of paper.

"Someone has been searching for the original ever since.""

He handed it to me.

At the top were the words *CARTER FAMILY SUCCESSION TRUST*.

Below them was a clause I had never seen before.

If my father were declared dead, control of his remaining voting shares would transfer according to a sealed instruction.

I read the next line.

Then I read it again.

The beneficiary wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't me, either.

It was Vanessa Reed.

I looked up in disbelief.

"Why would you leave anything to her?""

Dad's face darkened.

"I didn't.""

He pointed to the signature beneath the clause.

"Someone altered the original.""

Detective Morgan returned to our group.

"We've just received confirmation from the bank," she said.

"The $4.8 million transfer request was submitted using credentials linked to an account that should have been closed seven years ago.""

She turned toward my father.

"And, Mr. Carter, the person who reactivated that account did so using a security key registered to someone inside your immediate family.""

May you like

Then she named the person.

"Your eldest son, Ethan Carter.""
