Chapter 2: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
For seven years, I had believed my father was gone.
Now, less than fifteen minutes before my wedding, a stranger was telling me that the woman waiting in a bridal suite and the brother sitting among my guests might be connected to something far worse than financial fraud.
I called the unknown number.
It went straight to voicemail.
I tried again.
Nothing.
"Come on," I muttered, pacing the conference room.
"Who are you?""
The phone vibrated.
One new message.
*Ask Robert about the account ending in 7719. Then look at the signature on the transfer.*
I stared at the digits.
They meant nothing to me.
Yet something about the message felt deliberate, almost as if the sender wanted me to follow a trail rather than accept an accusation.
The conference room door opened.
Robert entered carrying a black leather folder, his gray hair slightly disheveled. He had been my father's attorney before becoming mine, and he was one of the few people I trusted without reservation.
He shut the door behind him.
"Tell me exactly what you heard.""
I played him the recording.
His face changed when Vanessa mentioned Daniel.
It changed again when she referred to a transfer.
When the recording ended, Robert sat down slowly.
"Did you know Vanessa had been communicating with your brother about company shares?""
"No.""
"Has she ever had access to your financial records?""
"She knows the company is valuable. She knows roughly what I earn. That's it.""
Robert opened his folder and removed several documents.
"Then explain this.""
He placed a printed application in front of me.
At the top was the name Carter Industries.
Below it was a request to transfer thirty percent of the company's ownership to a private investment firm.
I read the page once.
Then again.
The signature at the bottom looked exactly like mine.
My throat tightened.
"I didn't sign this.""
"I know," Robert said.
"I compared it with your verified signature records this morning.""
"When was it submitted?""
"Six weeks ago.""
I looked up sharply.
"Six weeks? Why wasn't I told?""
"The application was initially flagged because the supporting authorization didn't match the usual approval process. I requested additional verification. This morning, someone submitted a second set of documents.""
"Who?""
Robert tapped the page.
"Your brother's investment company.""
The room seemed to tilt.
Daniel had spent the last year telling everyone he was building his own investment portfolio. He had attended our family dinners, asked casual questions about the business, and congratulated me on every new contract.
I had thought he was finally finding his own path.
Instead, he appeared to be reaching into mine.
"How much of the company were they trying to take?"" I asked.
"Thirty percent on paper. The private agreement suggests they intended to sell part of that interest to another investor later.""
"Could they actually do it?""
"Not without valid authorization. But the forged documents are serious, Ethan. We need to secure the company's records immediately.""
I stood and walked to the window.
Below us, Atlanta traffic moved through the streets as though nothing had changed. Somewhere in the hotel, guests were taking photographs, sipping champagne, and congratulating themselves on attending what they believed would be a beautiful wedding.
My mother had died when I was young. My father had raised Daniel and me while building his own business, teaching us that a person's word mattered more than his wealth.
After the accident, Daniel had cried harder than anyone.
He'd stood beside me at the funeral and whispered, "It's just us now, Ethan. I'll never let you face anything alone.""
I closed my eyes.
"Robert, why would Daniel do this?""
"I don't know yet.""
"Then find out.""
Robert hesitated.
"There is something else.""
I turned.
He opened the folder to a bank statement.
"This morning, a transfer request was submitted for $4.8 million from a Carter Industries account. It was rejected because the authorization raised a security alert.""
My mouth went dry.
"Who submitted it?""
"The documents bear the same disputed signature.""
"Where was the money supposed to go?""
Robert pointed to the destination account.
The account holder's name appeared in bold.
*Richard Carter.*
My father.
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing through my ears.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Robert didn't answer.
"My father is dead.""
"I know what the official records say.""
"Then why is his name on a bank account?""
"That's what I'm trying to establish.""
I grabbed the paper.
The account had been opened years earlier, and its records contained a mailing address outside Georgia. The listed beneficiary was a private company with no obvious connection to Carter Industries.
But the name Richard Carter was unmistakable.
I called Daniel.
He answered almost immediately.
"Hey, big brother! Everything all right? We're waiting for the ceremony.""
His voice sounded so normal that I almost hated him more for it.
"Where are you?""
"In the ballroom. Where else would I be?""
"Stay there.""
He chuckled.
"What's that supposed to mean?""
"It means don't leave the hotel.""
A pause.
Then Daniel said, "Ethan, you're not getting cold feet, are you? Vanessa's been waiting three years for this.""
I stared at the forged signature.
"Did you submit an ownership transfer for Carter Industries?""
Silence.
Only for a second, but long enough.
Then he laughed.
"What? No. Where did you get that idea?""
"Answer me.""
"Ethan, this is ridiculous. It's your wedding day. Whatever you're worrying about, deal with it tomorrow.""
I could hear music playing in the background.
Then Daniel added, "You don't want to embarrass Vanessa in front of everyone, do you?""
My grip tightened around the phone.
There it was.
Not concern for me. Not confusion about a serious accusation.
Concern for the ceremony.
"Stay where you are," I repeated.
I ended the call.
Robert was watching me.
"He's involved," I said.
"Possibly. But we need evidence before making accusations.""
I glanced at the time.
Seven minutes until the ceremony.
"I don't care about the wedding anymore.""
Robert closed the folder.
"You should care about what happens next. If someone is moving money using forged documents, they may be counting on you to react emotionally.""
"I heard my fiancée say she didn't love me.""
"I believe you.""
"I heard her discussing my company with my brother.""
"I believe that, too.""
"Then what do you want me to do?""
Robert leaned forward.
"Make sure the truth comes out without giving them another opportunity to destroy the evidence.""
I looked at the wedding program on the table.
Three hundred guests. A massive screen behind the altar. A microphone that would carry every word to the back of the ballroom.
An idea began to form.
"Can the venue's screen display a recording?""
Robert studied me.
"Yes. Why?""
"Because I want everyone to hear what Vanessa said.""
"Ethan—"
"And I want the documents displayed, too.""
He stood abruptly.
"Not the confidential banking records. We need to protect the investigation. But the recording and evidence of a disputed ownership application can be handled carefully.""
I nodded.
"Then let's do that.""
Robert picked up his phone and called the hotel's event manager.
While he spoke, my phone vibrated again.
Another message from the unknown number.
*The account belongs to your father. But he didn't open it. Someone used his identity after the accident.*
I stared at the screen.
Then a second message arrived.
*Your father may still be alive.*
The room went completely still.
I called the number again.
This time, someone answered.
A man's voice, low and strained, whispered, "Ethan?""
I stopped breathing.
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then the voice said, "You have your father's eyes.""
My knees nearly buckled.
"Who are you?""
"I can't explain over the phone. Listen carefully. Do not let Vanessa leave with Daniel.""
"How do you know them?""
"Because I know what they did.""
"Who are you?""
The man inhaled shakily.
Then he spoke the name I had spent seven years believing I would never hear again.
"Richard Carter.""
The call disconnected.
I stared at my phone.
Robert had stopped speaking to the event manager. He was watching me with a look I had never seen on his face.
"What happened?"" he asked.
I swallowed hard.
"My father just called me.""
Robert's face drained of color.
Before either of us could say another word, the wedding coordinator knocked and opened the door.
"Mr. Carter? It's time. The bride is ready.""
I looked toward the ballroom.
May you like
Somewhere beyond those doors, Vanessa was preparing to marry me.
And somewhere beyond the city, a man officially declared dead had just spoken my name.
