Chapter 11: The Woman Who Held the Missing Evidence
Detective Morgan dispatched officers to Samantha's address while another team contacted local police to verify the supposed warrant.
Robert stayed with my father and me in the bank's security office, where we reviewed the documents recovered from the safety deposit box.
The photograph of my mother and the newborn lay between us.
I couldn't stop looking at it.
"Why would Mom hide Daniel's identity for so long?"" I asked.
Dad rubbed his forehead.
"Because she believed Michael would use him to hurt our family. When she discovered the affair had continued after Daniel's birth, she tried to end all contact with Michael.""
"And when Daniel found out the truth?""
"He was angry. He believed I had deliberately kept him from his biological father.""
I stared at the table.
"Did you?""
"No. I didn't even know the truth until years later.""
I wanted to believe him.
But every time my father offered an explanation, another question appeared.
"What happened to my mother after she left us?""
Dad looked away.
"She discovered that Michael was moving money through companies connected to Carter Industries. She tried to report him, but he threatened to expose her affair and destroy Daniel's future.""
"She disappeared because of him?""
"She disappeared because she was frightened of what he'd do to you.""
I swallowed.
"And you let me believe she was dead.""
Dad nodded.
"That was my mistake.""
Before I could answer, Detective Morgan returned from the hallway.
"We've located Samantha.""
I stood immediately.
"Is she alive?""
"Yes. Officers found her hiding in a neighbor's garage. Someone forced entry into her house, but she escaped through the back door.""
Relief swept through me.
"Did she recover the evidence?""
"She says the original archive is safe.""
"Where is she?""
"On her way here with two officers.""
Twenty minutes later, Samantha entered the security office wearing a borrowed coat. Her hair was disheveled, and a small cut marked her forehead.
I rushed toward her.
"Are you all right?""
She nodded, though her hands were shaking.
"I'm fine. They didn't get the drive.""
She reached into the lining of her handbag and removed a small black device.
"This contains the archived financial records, the transfer requests, and the internal emails Michael sent to Daniel.""
Robert took the drive carefully.
"Have you altered any of the files?""
"No. They're copies from the company's offline backup system. I've preserved the original timestamps and verification data.""
Detective Morgan placed the device into an evidence bag.
"Thank you. Our digital forensics team will examine it.""
Samantha looked at me.
"Ethan, I need to tell you something before you hear it from someone else.""
I braced myself.
"What?""
"Vanessa contacted me six months ago. She wanted access to the company's shareholder records.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she claimed you had authorized her to review them. I asked you through your office, and you confirmed nothing. When I confronted her, she said she'd misunderstood your instructions.""
"And you let it go?""
"I didn't. I restricted her access and flagged the request. But she found another way in.""
"Through Daniel?""
Samantha nodded.
"They used a vendor account that had been inactive for years. Someone had restored its access permissions.""
Robert leaned forward.
"Can the account be traced?""
"Yes. The restoration was approved using an administrative credential assigned to Michael Grant.""
Detective Morgan wrote something in her notebook.
"This is useful evidence. We'll need to establish who controlled the credential at the time.""
Samantha looked at my father.
"There's another reason I came tonight. I found a message in the archive that I think you need to see.""
She removed a printed email from her bag.
The sender was Michael Grant.
The recipient was Daniel.
The date was seven years earlier, two days before my father's supposed accident.
The subject line read: *THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*
Robert read the email aloud.
"Richard has agreed to meet me at the marina. He believes I can help him recover the missing funds. Once he arrives, we'll make certain he cannot interfere with the transfer again.""
My father went pale.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"That's a threat.""
"It's evidence of intent," Detective Morgan said.
"But we need the full context and corroboration.""
She turned the page.
The email continued.
"Daniel will provide the vehicle. Once the incident is reported, the estate will be processed under the amended trust. Ethan will assume control of the company, and we can approach him through the new spouse when the time is right.""
I looked up.
"The new spouse?""
Robert's face tightened.
"This plan was developed years before Vanessa entered Ethan's life.""
Samantha nodded.
"The archive contains more messages. Michael had been discussing a marriage-based claim with Daniel long before Ethan met Vanessa.""
My stomach turned.
"So Vanessa wasn't a coincidence.""
"No," Samantha said.
"But I don't know whether she was recruited directly by Michael or introduced through Daniel.""
Detective Morgan looked toward my father.
"Mr. Carter, do you remember meeting Michael at the marina?""
Dad nodded slowly.
"I remember arriving. I remember Daniel's car parked near the dock. After that, my memory is incomplete.""
"Did you see anyone else?""
He closed his eyes.
"There was a woman. I thought she was a bystander. She was standing near the boathouse, wearing a red scarf.""
I felt a strange chill.
"What woman?""
"I don't know. But I remember her face.""
Samantha suddenly went still.
"A red scarf?""
Dad turned toward her.
"Yes.""
She opened the archive on a secured laptop and searched through the indexed files.
A moment later, she turned the screen toward us.
It showed a photograph from a private company dinner held six months before the accident.
Michael stood beside Daniel.
A woman in a red scarf stood behind them.
I recognized her immediately.
Patricia Reed.
Vanessa's mother.
I stared at the screen.
"She was involved from the beginning?""
"Possibly," Detective Morgan said.
"The photograph establishes association, not criminal involvement.""
Samantha opened another file.
"This email was sent the day after the accident.""
The sender was Patricia.
The recipient was Michael.
*The father is gone. The older boy will be easier to control. Daniel wants his share, and the girl is ready when the time comes.*
I felt as though the air had been sucked out of the room.
"The girl," I whispered.
"Vanessa.""
Robert nodded grimly.
Detective Morgan photographed the screen and secured the email.
Then Samantha opened one final document.
It was a scanned letter bearing my mother's handwriting.
Unlike the other documents, this one had no date.
The first line read:
Michael, if you ever use Daniel to destroy Ethan's life, I will reveal the truth about the child you abandoned.
I looked at my father.
"What child?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Samantha scrolled down.
The final paragraph contained a single sentence.
You already took one son from me. You will not take the other.
I stared at the words.
Michael was Daniel's biological father. That much we knew.
But my mother's letter suggested there was another child.
Someone Michael had abandoned.
Someone she had known about.
Before I could ask more, Detective Morgan's phone rang.
She listened carefully.
Then she looked at Samantha.
"We've confirmed that Michael Grant was not at his home or office tonight.""
"Where is he?"" I asked.
"The private airfield has a flight registered under his company. It departed twenty minutes ago.""
"Where was it going?""
She checked the report.
"An island off the Georgia coast.""
Dad gripped his walking stick.
"Which island?""
Detective Morgan looked up.
"Tybee Island.""
My father closed his eyes.
For the first time that night, he looked truly defeated.
"That's where your mother and I spent our honeymoon.""
I stood.
"Then that's where we're going.""
Detective Morgan shook her head.
"You are not going anywhere without police protection.""
"Fine. I'll go with you.""
She studied me for a moment.
Then she nodded.
"We leave in five minutes.""
As Robert gathered the documents, Samantha caught my arm.
"Ethan, wait.""
She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.
"I found this in the archive. It was attached to a file marked with your mother's name.""
I opened it.
Inside was a hospital photograph of a young woman holding a baby.
The woman's face was partially obscured, but I recognized the bracelet on her wrist.
The same silver bracelet from my mother's photograph.
On the back, someone had written:
*THE SECOND CHILD. BORN THREE YEARS AFTER DANIEL.*
I stared at the date.
Then I looked at my father.
"Who was this baby?""
Dad's lips parted.
He studied the photograph for several seconds.
Finally, he whispered, "I thought your mother had miscarried.""
Robert looked at him sharply.
"Richard, are you saying there was another pregnancy?""
Dad nodded.
"And if this photograph is genuine, then there may have been another child.""
Detective Morgan took the photograph.
"We'll need to verify its origin.""
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
*If you want your mother alive, come alone. Bring the original trust.*
Below it was a photograph of a woman sitting in a dark room.
Her face was turned toward the camera.
May you like
It was my mother.
And standing behind her, one hand resting on her shoulder, was Michael Grant.
