Chapter 14: The Attorney Who Sold Us All

Nobody moved.

Robert stood beneath the hallway light, his face pale, the tablet glowing in his hands.

My mother gripped my arm.

Grace stepped in front of her.

Detective Morgan immediately signaled an officer to block the doorway.

I stared at Robert.

"Tell me that's a mistake.""

He swallowed.

"Ethan, the document is genuine. But the authorization was not submitted by me.""

"You expect me to believe someone forged your signature, too?""

"I'm telling you the truth.""

"Then why does your name appear as the representative?""

"Because someone is attempting to make it look as though I agreed to accept the proxy.""

Grace took the tablet and examined the approval record.

"Robert is telling the truth about one thing. The document was submitted through a third-party legal portal. His signature was copied from an older filing.""

Detective Morgan took the tablet.

"Can you identify who submitted it?""

"Not from this screen alone," Grace replied.

"But the proxy agreement contains a reference number linked to the altered succession trust.""

Robert stared at her.

"You're saying the same person manipulated both documents?""

"Yes. And whoever did it has access to the original registration data.""

I looked at Robert.

"Who had access?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Michael Grant. Me. And the independent trustee responsible for your mother's trust.""

"Anyone else?""

Robert hesitated.

Then he looked at my father.

"Richard gave Michael temporary access to the estate records seven years ago. But the access should have expired after thirty days.""

Dad closed his eyes.

"That was my mistake.""

Grace shook her head.

"No. It was the opportunity Michael needed. He copied the records, retained unauthorized access, and used the information to manipulate the trust.""

Detective Morgan turned toward Robert.

"Mr. Hayes, I need you to come with us to the station for questioning.""

Robert nodded.

"Of course.""

He placed the tablet on the table.

Then he looked at me.

"Ethan, I have represented your family for twenty years. I would never knowingly help someone steal your company.""

I studied him.

For years, Robert had been the person I called whenever something went wrong. He had negotiated my contracts, defended my business, and stood beside me when I believed my father was dead.

But I had learned enough that night to know trust was not proof.

"Then help us find the person who did this," I said.

Robert nodded.

"I will.""

Detective Morgan escorted him outside.

When the door closed, Grace looked at me.

"We need to talk about the proxy.""

"What could be worse than this?""

She pointed at the final clause.

"The person holding the proxy gets the right to vote your shares until the agreement is revoked. If the proxy is accepted, Michael could gain effective control of Carter Industries without transferring a single share.""

I felt sick.

"And if the company accepts it?""

"He could replace the board, move assets, or arrange a sale to an outside investor.""

My father gripped his walking stick.

"That's what Michael wanted all along.""

I looked at him.

"Why would he need Vanessa to marry me if he could simply forge a proxy?""

"Because the marriage was supposed to give him leverage if you challenged the transfer," Grace answered.

"Michael believed that once you were married, Vanessa could claim a marital interest in the company. He planned to use that claim to pressure you into accepting the agreement.""

I remembered Vanessa standing at the altar, smiling beneath her veil.

Ready to make me the luckiest woman in the world?

I'd thought she was asking me to marry her.

In reality, she had been waiting for the final piece of a transaction.

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

Detective Morgan, who had just returned to the hallway, motioned for me to answer on speaker.

I did.

Michael Grant's voice filled the room.

"I take it you've seen the proxy agreement.""

"Where's Daniel?"" I demanded.

"Safe, for the moment.""

"Where's Vanessa?""

"She has made some unfortunate decisions.""

"Answer me.""

Michael sighed.

"Ethan, you're an intelligent man. You know how business works. People make arrangements. They protect their interests.

Your father did it. Your attorney did it. I did it.""

"You tried to steal my company.""

"I tried to correct an injustice.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You forged my signature.""

"Your signature was only a technicality.""

My mother suddenly stepped toward the phone.

"You took everything from me, Michael. Don't pretend this was ever about justice.""

For the first time, his voice changed.

"Elizabeth.""

She trembled but didn't back down.

"You used our son. You destroyed our family. And when I tried to protect Grace, you made me disappear.""

Michael's voice hardened.

"You made your choices.""

"And now Ethan is making his.""

I took the phone.

"Tell me where Daniel is.""

"Come to the old marina. Bring the original trust. No police.

No attorneys. Just you.""

Detective Morgan shook her head sharply.

Michael continued.

"If you don't come, the proxy becomes effective at midnight. By morning, you'll still own your company, technically. But you won't control a single decision.""

I looked at the time.

Twenty minutes until midnight.

"What about Vanessa?"" I asked.

Michael chuckled.

"Your bride has already served her purpose.""

The call disconnected.

I stared at my phone.

Grace stepped beside me.

"We can't let him activate that proxy.""

Detective Morgan nodded.

"We won't. But if he has the original registration credentials, we need to intercept him before midnight.""

I looked at my mother.

She was shaking.

"Mom, do you know what Michael is planning?""

She nodded slowly.

"Seven years ago, Michael told me that if Richard ever returned, he would use Daniel to claim the company. If that failed, he would destroy the original trust and make certain no one could prove who owned the voting shares.""

"And Daniel agreed?""

She looked away.

"Daniel thought Michael would give him everything. He never realized that Michael planned to replace him as soon as the company was under his control.""

I felt a grim understanding settle over me.

Daniel had betrayed our family because he believed he was reclaiming something that belonged to him.

But Michael had never intended to share the victory.

I turned toward Detective Morgan.

"We're going to the marina.""

She shook her head.

"You're not going alone.""

"I know.""

"And we are not handing over any original documents.""

Grace smiled faintly.

"Good. Because the original trust isn't in the safety deposit box anymore.""

Everyone looked at her.

She reached into her bag and produced a small encrypted drive.

"I copied the original registration years ago, before Michael found the records. The document in the box was a certified copy. The real file has been stored offline.""

Robert, listening from the doorway under an officer's supervision, looked stunned.

"You had it all this time?""

"I needed to be certain it couldn't be altered. Now I can prove the proxy was fraudulent.""

Detective Morgan took the drive.

"Then we have what we need.""

I looked at the clock.

Eleven forty-seven.

"We still need Michael to admit what he did.""

Grace's expression hardened.

"He'll never confess unless he believes he's already won.""

I understood.

We would give him exactly what he wanted to see.

An apparently helpless heir. A family divided. A forged agreement ready to be signed.

And one final chance for Michael Grant to reveal himself.

The old marina stood beneath a low ceiling of clouds.

Police positioned themselves around the property while Detective Morgan arranged the exchange. I walked toward the dock carrying a folder containing a harmless copy of the trust.

Michael stood beside a black SUV.

Daniel was with him.

My brother looked exhausted, his suit wrinkled, his face pale.

Vanessa stood several feet behind them, still wearing her wedding dress.

Its hem was dirty, and the veil had been torn away.

When she saw me, she rushed forward.

"Ethan!""

Michael caught her arm.

"Stay where you are.""

She twisted free.

"Please, Ethan, listen to me!""

I stopped.

"What do you want?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't know he'd take my phone and lock me inside the house. I thought he was going to help us.""

"Help you steal my company?""

She lowered her head.

"I was wrong.""

"You knew what you were doing.""

"Yes.""

For the first time, she didn't try to deny it.

"I wanted the money. I wanted the lifestyle. I thought I could marry you, get what I wanted, and leave before you realized what had happened.""

I stared at her.

"And you expect me to forgive you?""

"No.""

She swallowed.

"I just need you to know that the money wasn't the only thing I wanted.""

I almost laughed.

"Don't do this, Vanessa.""

"I wanted to be someone who mattered. Your brother made me believe that if I helped him, I would finally have control over my life.""

"You had control. You chose to betray me.""

She began crying harder.

"Ethan, please don't let him do this.""

Michael stepped forward.

"Enough. Give me the folder.""

I held it out.

"First, tell me where my mother is.""

"Safe.""

"Where?""

"With your sister.""

"Then why did you threaten to hurt her?""

Michael smiled.

"Because I knew you'd come.""

He opened the folder and began examining the documents.

Then he looked at me.

"Sign the proxy.""

"No.""

His smile disappeared.

"You don't understand what you're refusing.""

"I understand perfectly.""

I looked directly into his eyes.

"You used my brother. You manipulated my fiancée. You forged my signature and tried to steal a company I built with my own hands.""

Michael closed the folder.

"Your father built the foundation. You inherited the opportunity. You were never the only person entitled to benefit.""

"Then why not ask for a legitimate share?""

"Because you would have said no.""

"Probably.""

My answer seemed to infuriate him.

He grabbed my collar.

"Do you think you can walk away from this? I have spent twenty years making certain your family never discovers what happened.""

I didn't resist.

I simply looked over his shoulder.

"Then perhaps you should tell them.""

Michael froze.

He turned.

Detective Morgan stepped onto the dock, her badge visible beneath the lights.

Behind her came a line of officers.

Michael released me.

For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

Detective Morgan raised her voice.

"Michael Grant, step away from Ethan Carter. You're under arrest on suspicion of financial fraud, identity theft, and attempted coercion. Additional charges may follow.""

Daniel stumbled backward.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Michael stared at the officers.

Then he laughed.

"You think you've won?""

He reached into his coat.

An officer shouted.

Michael stopped moving.

Slowly, he removed a phone.

"There's one thing you still don't know," he said.

He looked at me.

"And it's the reason your mother has spent so many years afraid of me.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

Michael smiled.

"Ask your father who really signed the document that made him disappear.""

I turned.

May you like

My father stood at the edge of the dock.

And he was crying.
