Chapter 9: Vanessa’s Final Move

The drive back to the mansion felt endless.

Every second felt like a countdown.

Victor had escaped during the confusion.

Marcus’s team had tracked the warehouse, but by the time they arrived, he was gone.

Lily was safe.

That should have been enough.

But something was wrong.

Victor’s final words kept repeating in my mind.

*Vanessa was taking everything.*

When we reached home, the front gates were open.

That alone made me stop.

My security system never failed.

Not unless someone had permission.

I stepped out of the car.

Marcus followed.

“Sir, stay behind us.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I’m done staying behind.””

We entered the mansion.

The lights were on.

Everything looked normal.

Too normal.

Then we saw the living room.

Empty.

No staff.

No guards.

No Vanessa.

Only a folder sitting on the table.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

Inside were legal documents.

Transfer agreements.

Power of attorney papers.

My blood turned cold.

Marcus read over my shoulder.

“Sir…”

I looked at him.

“She was preparing to take control.””

The documents showed Vanessa had been slowly moving my assets.

Not all at once.

Little by little.

Enough that nobody would notice.

I remembered every moment.

The concern.

The kindness.

The way she insisted on managing my medication.

She wasn’t caring for me.

She was controlling me.

Lily stood beside me.

“Dad?””

I closed the folder.

“It’s okay.””

But she looked at the papers.

“She was going to take our home?””

I looked at my daughter.

“No.””

I knelt down.

“She was trying.””

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.

She wasn’t crying anymore.

She wasn’t pretending.

She looked calm.

Almost relieved.

“You finally understand.””

I stared at her.

“You worked with Victor.””

Her smile faded.

“I worked with many people.””

“You tried to poison me.””

“I tried to keep you quiet.””

The honesty shocked me.

Lily grabbed my hand.

I stepped forward.

“Why?””

Vanessa walked down the stairs.

“Because you were never supposed to wake up.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

She stopped halfway.

“The accident wasn’t meant to leave you disabled.””

Her voice was cold.

“It was meant to end everything.””

The room became silent.

Marcus reached for his phone.

Vanessa noticed.

“Don’t.””

She smiled.

“Because if you call the police, you’ll never know who else was involved.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Someone closer than Victor.””

My heart sank.

“There’s someone else?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You still don’t see it.””

She walked closer.

“Victor wanted your company.””

“Then what did you want?””

Her eyes moved to Lily.

And my blood froze.

“No.””

Vanessa smiled.

“I wanted the one thing you never valued.””

“What?””

“Your legacy.””

I stared at her.

“You mean my daughter?””

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

And in that moment, I understood.

Vanessa had never planned to simply steal my money.

She wanted to replace my entire family.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

A voice came through the speaker.

A voice I recognized.

My heart stopped.

Because the person calling Vanessa was someone I thought was dead.

And when Vanessa whispered his name…

May you like

I realized the biggest secret had never been hidden inside my company.

It had been hidden inside my own family.
