Chapter 14: The Final Heir

The photograph shook in my hand.

A woman.

Dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

A stranger.

But beneath the picture was a name.

*Emily Carter.*

My name.

My family name.

I looked at Marcus.

“Who is she?””

He didn’t answer.

Clara did.

“She’s our half-sister.””

The words felt impossible.

Another secret.

Another person hidden from me.

My father closed his eyes.

“I never wanted you to know.””

I turned toward him.

“You never wanted me to know anything.””

His face fell.

And for once, he didn’t defend himself.

Because I was right.

Emily had been the missing piece.

The person who connected everyone.

Victor.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

My family.

All of them.

“How long has she been alive?””

My father answered quietly.

“Since before you were born.””

I stared at him.

“You had another child.””

He nodded.

“I made mistakes.””

I laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice broke.

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary. Mistakes are saying the wrong thing.””

I pointed around the room.

“This was an entire life built on lies.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily tugged my sleeve.

“Dad.””

I looked down.

“Can we leave?””

That simple question hurt more than anything.

Because she wasn’t asking about money.

Or companies.

Or revenge.

She just wanted to go home.

I knelt beside her.

“Yes.””

But before we could move, the lights went out.

Again.

A familiar pattern.

A message appeared on the old television.

A video began playing.

Emily appeared on the screen.

She looked calm.

Almost kind.

“Hello.””

I stared.

“You.””

She smiled.

“I know this is overwhelming.””

“You kidnapped my daughter.””

Her expression changed.

“I protected her.””

“You took her.””

“Because everyone around you was lying.””

I clenched my jaw.

“You’re no different.””

Emily looked genuinely hurt.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

She leaned closer to the camera.

“I’m the only one who never wanted to destroy you.””

“Then what do you want?””

The answer came immediately.

“What was always mine.””

The screen showed company documents.

Ownership transfers.

Family agreements.

Then one final page.

A document with my father’s signature.

Emily continued.

“Your father promised me my share.””

My father stepped forward.

“Emily.””

She looked at him.

“You abandoned me.””

The room became quiet.

“You gave everything to them.””

She pointed at me.

“You built a family while pretending I didn’t exist.””

I watched my father.

For the first time, I saw something beyond guilt.

Shame.

Emily continued.

“I didn’t create this war.””

She looked directly at me.

“I inherited it.””

The screen went black.

Marcus looked at me.

“She’s not lying about everything.””

I turned sharply.

“What?””

“She does have a legal claim.””

Clara nodded slowly.

“The documents are real.””

I looked around.

“So everyone was fighting over something that was supposed to belong to all of us.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Then my phone rang.

This time, it wasn’t a message.

It was a call.

From Emily.

I answered.

“Where is my daughter?””

Her voice was quiet.

“She’s with me.””

My heart dropped.

I looked beside me.

Lily was gone.

Again.

I turned around.

The room was empty.

No footsteps.

No broken door.

Nothing.

Just a small piece of paper on the floor.

I picked it up.

May you like

Only one sentence was written.

*Come alone if you want to know why your father really disappeared.*
