Chapter 13: The Last Betrayal

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The rain outside became the only sound inside the old family house.

I stared at the name on my phone.

Marcus.

My security chief.

My closest ally.

The man who had protected my family for years.

The man who had helped me uncover every secret.

The man who had supposedly been searching for the truth beside me.

“No,” I whispered.

Clara watched my face.

“You know him.””

I slowly looked up.

“Yes.””

Her expression changed.

“Then you finally understand.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Clara stepped closer.

“Your entire investigation was guided by him.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because suddenly every moment replayed in my mind.

Marcus finding the hidden account.

Marcus discovering the warehouse.

Marcus always arriving at the exact moment we needed him.

He wasn’t following the clues.

He was creating the path.

My hands tightened.

“He saved my life.””

Clara looked at me sadly.

“That’s what makes him dangerous.””

Lily moved closer.

“Daddy…”

I immediately turned toward her.

“I’m here.””

She grabbed my hand.

“I don’t like this place.””

I looked at my daughter.

Neither did I.

Because the one thing I had always believed was that someone was protecting us.

Now I didn’t know who was standing with me.

A sound came from the front door.

Slow footsteps.

Everyone froze.

Marcus walked inside.

Without a weapon.

Without fear.

He looked exactly the same as always.

Calm.

Professional.

Almost disappointed.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.””

My entire body went cold.

“You.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“Is she okay?””

I stepped between them.

“Don’t look at her.””

His expression changed slightly.

“After everything I’ve done for you…”

“Everything you’ve done?””

My voice became louder.

“You manipulated me.””

“No.””

“You controlled the investigation.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Marcus removed his coat.

“I guided you because you were looking at the wrong enemies.””

Clara laughed bitterly.

“You always loved pretending you were the hero.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You disappeared for ten years.””

“Because of you.””

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Marcus sighed.

“The truth is simple.””

He looked at me.

“Your family destroyed itself long before I arrived.””

I stepped forward.

“Explain.””

Marcus walked toward the old fireplace.

“Your grandfather created the company using a private agreement. The family was supposed to control it together.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“You know the version everyone wanted you to know.””

He picked up an old photograph.

“Your father discovered Victor was stealing.””

“Yes.””

“But he also discovered something worse.””

“What?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

“He discovered your brother Ethan was helping him.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Ethan was young. Angry. He wanted recognition.””

Clara looked away.

“He wasn’t the only one.””

I turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

She remained silent.

Marcus answered.

“Your sister also made a deal.””

My heart sank.

I looked at Clara.

“Is that true?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

“To prove I mattered.””

The words hurt more than anger.

Because suddenly everyone had been fighting for something.

Power.

Recognition.

Control.

And I was the only one who never knew the game existed.

Marcus continued.

“Your father tried to fix everything.””

“Then why did he disappear?””

Marcus looked at my father.

My father lowered his eyes.

Because he already knew the answer.

“He wasn’t killed.””

I froze.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

“He disappeared because he discovered the final betrayal.””

“Who?””

Marcus was silent.

Then he looked at me.

“You.””

The room went completely still.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Your father discovered that the person moving company funds wasn’t Victor.””

My breathing stopped.

“Then who?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“The person who had access to everything.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Marcus whispered:

“Your wife Vanessa wasn’t the beginning.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“She was just a piece.””

I looked at Lily.

Then at my family.

Then at Marcus.

“Who was controlling Vanessa?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he opened a folder.

Inside was one photograph.

A photograph of a woman.

A woman I had never seen before.

But the name written below made my blood freeze.

Because it was the same last name as mine.

And Marcus said:

“Meet the person who has been trying to inherit your entire life.””
