Chapter 7: The Abandoned Warehouse
The old warehouse stood at the edge of the city, surrounded by empty fields and broken streetlights.
The perfect place to disappear someone.
I parked the car fifty yards away.
Marcus grabbed my arm before I opened the door.
“Sir, you’re not going in alone.””
I looked at him.
“The message said alone.””
“It’s a trap.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you walking into it?””
I looked through the windshield at the abandoned building.
“Because my daughter is inside.””
Marcus went silent.
There was nothing he could say.
No security plan.
No strategy.
No amount of money could change one simple fact.
A father does not negotiate when his child is in danger.
I took the folder containing the ownership documents and stepped out.
My legs moved steadily across the gravel.
Six weeks ago, I couldn’t walk.
Six weeks ago, Vanessa thought she had trapped me forever.
She was wrong.
The warehouse door opened before I reached it.
A voice came from inside.
“You finally came.””
I froze.
Victor.
I entered slowly.
The inside smelled like rust and old machinery.
A single light hung from the ceiling.
And beneath it sat Lily.
Her hands were tied, but she was awake.
The moment she saw me, tears filled her eyes.
“Daddy!””
I moved forward.
A man stepped out of the shadows.
Victor.
He was older than I expected.
Gray hair.
Calm eyes.
The kind of person who never needed to raise his voice because he believed everyone would obey him.
“Stop there.””
I stopped.
Lily looked at him.
“Don’t listen to him, Dad.””
Victor smiled.
“She’s brave.””
“She’s nine years old.””
“Yes.””
He looked at Lily.
“Your daughter has something many adults don’t have.””
“What’s that?””
“Courage.””
I stared at him.
“You kidnapped a child to compliment her?””
Victor smiled slightly.
“No.””
He walked closer.
“I kidnapped your daughter because you left me no choice.””
I laughed.
“No choice?””
“You destroyed everything I built.””
“You tried to steal my company.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“You still believe that story?””
I said nothing.
He pointed at the folder in my hand.
“Give me the documents.””
“First, release Lily.””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
I studied his face.
“You’re not here for the documents.””
Victor smiled.
“Smart.””
“Then what do you want?””
He walked around the room.
“I want you to understand something.””
“What?””
“You became successful because you were willing to sacrifice people.””
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
Victor stopped.
“Do you remember Thomas Reed?””
The name hit me unexpectedly.
Thomas.
One of my first employees.
A man I fired ten years ago.
“He stole from the company.””
Victor smiled.
“That’s what you were told.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your entire empire was built on information you never questioned.””
Lily looked between us.
“Dad…”
I ignored the fear in my chest.
“Where is this going?””
Victor leaned closer.
“Your brother knows.””
My eyes moved toward him.
“Ethan?””
“Yes.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“He knows the truth about your first company.””
The warehouse door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Ethan walked inside.
My stomach dropped.
“What are you doing here?””
He looked at me with guilt in his eyes.
“I came to stop this.””
Victor laughed.
“Stop it?””
He walked toward Ethan.
“You were always terrible at lying.””
Ethan looked at Lily.
“I’m sorry.””
My anger exploded.
“You don’t get to apologize.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“I know.””
“You helped them.””
“I tried to fix it.””
“You caused it.””
Silence.
Victor looked amused.
“Family arguments are always entertaining.””
I looked at him.
“You’re enjoying this.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His smile disappeared.
“Because for ten years, everyone believed you were the hero.””
He pointed at me.
“But I know what you did.””
I stepped forward.
“Tell me.””
Victor looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“You want your daughter back?””
“Yes.””
“Then ask your brother what happened the night your father died.””
My blood ran cold.
Because that was a question I never expected.
My father’s death.
The one thing I thought had nothing to do with this.
I looked at Ethan.
His face had gone completely pale.
“Ethan…”
He couldn’t look at me.
Victor smiled.
“Now you understand.””
The documents in my hand suddenly felt heavier.
Because the truth I had been searching for wasn’t about Vanessa.
It wasn’t about the accident.
May you like
It started long before that.
And Ethan was about to tell me the secret he had buried for ten years.
