Chapter 8: The Sister Who Disappeared

Vanessa’s reaction told me everything.

She could lie with words.

She could cry.

She could pretend.

But she couldn’t control fear.

Not when a name from her past appeared.

“Claire,” I repeated.

Vanessa looked away.

“Don’t.””

I stepped closer.

“Who is she?””

“She’s nobody.””

“Nobody?””

I laughed bitterly.

“Your sister is nobody?””

Her face tightened.

“She has nothing to do with this.””

“Then why are you scared?””

She didn’t answer.

Detective Harris walked back into the room.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Vanessa has a sister named Claire.””

The detective immediately wrote something down.

“Claire what?””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Stop digging into things you don’t understand.””

Detective Harris looked at her.

“That is exactly what we are trying to do.””

Vanessa sat down.

For the first time, she looked exhausted.

“I didn’t hurt Olivia.””

I stared at her.

“Then why hide everything?””

She looked at Lily.

Then away.

“Because I knew nobody would believe me.””

I wanted to believe that there was another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A missing piece.

Anything.

But every road kept leading back to the same place.

Vanessa.

Detective Harris received a call.

She stepped outside.

A few minutes later, she returned.

“We found Claire.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face went pale.

“Where?””

The detective looked serious.

“She’s in a hospital outside the city.””

“Why?””

“She requested to speak with Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“She said she knows what happened to Olivia.””

Vanessa stood suddenly.

“No.””

The room became silent.

Detective Harris looked at her.

“Why are you saying no?””

Vanessa realized her mistake.

“I mean…”

She stopped.

There was nothing left to say.

Two hours later, I sat beside Claire’s hospital bed.

She looked older than Vanessa.

Not because of age.

Because of pain.

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“You’re Daniel.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She took a deep breath.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For not stopping her sooner.””

My jaw tightened.

“Tell me about Olivia.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Olivia was a sweet little girl.””

She smiled sadly.

“She loved drawing animals.””

Lily looked up.

“She liked drawing?””

Claire nodded.

“She drew a rabbit for me once.””

My daughter hugged her stuffed rabbit.

Then Claire said something that made my blood freeze.

“Vanessa hated that rabbit.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because Olivia said it reminded her of her mother.””

The same pattern.

Again.

Claire continued.

“Vanessa wanted Olivia to stop talking about the past.””

I felt sick.

“Like Lily.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

“Where is Olivia?””

Claire looked down.

“I don’t know.””

My heart sank.

“But?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“But Vanessa does.””

I leaned forward.

“How do you know?””

“Because I saw them together the night Olivia disappeared.””

I stopped breathing.

“What did you see?””

Claire grabbed the blanket.

“Vanessa took Olivia to the old family cabin.””

“Why?””

“She said she needed to teach her a lesson.””

My hands trembled.

“Did you follow them?””

“Yes.””

Claire started crying.

“I was too late.””

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

“The next morning, Vanessa came back alone.””

I whispered:

“Where was Olivia?””

Claire looked away.

“I asked her.””

“And?””

Her voice broke.

“She told me…”

The monitor beside her began beeping faster.

The nurse rushed in.

I stood.

“Claire?””

She grabbed my wrist with surprising strength.

“She told me Olivia would never come back because…”

The nurse asked me to step away.

Claire’s grip loosened.

May you like

But before they pulled me back, she whispered the words that changed everything.

“She told me the girl was never supposed to be found.””
