Chapter 4: The Secret Vanessa Buried
I stared at the message on my phone until the words blurred.
“I’m the person who tried to warn you before another child got hurt.””
My fingers felt cold.
I looked at Vanessa.
She was standing across the room, pretending she wasn’t watching me.
But she was.
She knew something.
“Daniel?”” she asked softly.
I didn’t answer.
The wedding coordinator quietly stepped outside, giving us space.
Lily stayed beside me, holding my hand with both of hers.
That small gesture broke my heart.
My daughter wasn’t supposed to be afraid on my wedding day.
She was supposed to be excited.
She was supposed to throw flowers.
She was supposed to smile.
Instead, she was standing behind me like I was the only safe place left.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who is Olivia?””
Her face changed instantly.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
“Why are you asking me that?””
“So you know who she is.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I know many people named Olivia.””
The door opened.
My brother Michael walked in.
I hadn’t even realized he had arrived at the venue.
He looked at Lily first.
Then his eyes moved to Vanessa.
His expression darkened.
“Daniel.””
I nodded.
“You knew something.””
Michael sighed.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“Then tell me now.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.””
Michael ignored her.
“Two years ago, Vanessa was living with a man named Eric. He had a daughter from his first marriage.””
My chest tightened.
“Her name?””
Michael looked at Lily.
“Olivia.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
I felt Lily’s fingers tighten around mine.
“What happened to her?”” I asked.
Michael hesitated.
“She disappeared from their home for three days.””
The room became silent.
“Disappeared?””
“Her father found out she had been locked outside during the night as punishment.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That is not true.””
Michael looked at her.
“Then explain why the neighbors called child services.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“They misunderstood.””
I looked at her.
“Again?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means every time someone gets hurt, there’s always someone misunderstanding you.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked angry instead of afraid.
“You’re really going to destroy our relationship because of accusations?””
“No.””
I looked at Lily.
“I’m protecting my daughter because of what I saw with my own eyes.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Daniel, you’re emotional.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m finally paying attention.””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because she knew.
She knew I was no longer the man who believed every explanation.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, a photo appeared.
A little girl standing beside a woman.
The picture was old.
But I recognized Vanessa immediately.
The little girl had a backpack.
And tears in her eyes.
The caption underneath said:
“This was taken the day Olivia was removed from Vanessa’s home.””
My stomach dropped.
I showed Michael.
He looked shocked.
“Where did you get that?””
I typed back.
“Who are you?””
The response came.
“Someone who worked at Olivia’s school.””
Vanessa suddenly reached for my phone.
I pulled it away.
“Stop.””
Her voice cracked.
“Daniel, please listen to me.””
I stared at her.
“Why did you never tell me about Olivia?””
“Because it wasn’t what you think.””
“Then what was it?””
She looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
Those words made my chest tighten.
“Mistakes?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence was louder than anything.
Lily whispered.
“Daddy?””
I turned toward her.
“Yes?””
“Is she mad at me?””
That question destroyed me.
Because Lily still thought this was somehow her fault.
I knelt down.
“No.””
I held her face gently.
“None of this is because of you.””
She nodded, but her eyes were still full of fear.
Then Michael’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He listened for a few seconds.
Then looked at me.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
“It’s Olivia’s mother.””
I stood.
“She wants to talk to me?””
Michael nodded.
“She says she has proof.””
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the door.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stopped.
Too late.
Because we all heard the fear in her voice.
And that was when I realized…
May you like
Vanessa wasn’t scared of losing me.
She was scared of what someone else was about to reveal.
