Chapter 11: The First Secret
The room became silent.
“The first child?”” I repeated.
Vanessa nodded slowly.
I felt my anger return.
“How many children are we talking about?””
She looked hurt.
“That’s not what I meant.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa sat down.
For the first time, she looked exhausted.
Not like someone caught.
Like someone carrying something heavy.
“My younger brother had a daughter.””
Detective Harris wrote something down.
“Name?””
“Emma.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Another child.
Another story.
Another secret.
“What happened to Emma?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at her hands.
“She lived with us for six months.””
“Why?””
“Her mother was sick.””
“And?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“She was difficult.””
I immediately looked at her.
The same word.
Again.
Vanessa noticed my expression.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds familiar.””
She looked down.
“Because it is.””
Nobody spoke.
“I hated myself for becoming the same person I hated growing up.””
I crossed my arms.
“But you still did it.””
Tears formed in her eyes.
“Yes.””
That honesty should have changed something.
It didn’t.
Because Lily’s fear was still real.
Olivia’s pain was still real.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought if I controlled everything, nothing bad would happen.””
Detective Harris shook her head.
“That’s not control. That’s harm.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
“Where is Emma?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She’s safe.””
“Where?””
“With my brother.””
I stared.
“Then why didn’t anyone know?””
“Because after Olivia disappeared, I stopped trusting people.””
I almost laughed.
“You stopped trusting people?””
“You think I don’t know how that sounds?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“I know I hurt people.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it was the first time she said it.
Not “they misunderstood.””
Not “they lied.””
Not “they were difficult.””
She said:
“I hurt people.””
Detective Harris received a notification.
She checked her phone.
Her expression changed.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“We found Olivia.””
My entire body froze.
“Where?””
“She walked into a community center.””
I stood.
“Is she okay?””
“She’s scared but physically safe.””
I closed my eyes.
A child who had been missing for years had finally been found.
But there was something else.
Detective Harris looked at Vanessa.
“Before we bring Olivia here, we need to ask one question.””
“What?””
“Why did you hide her?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I didn’t.””
Everyone stared.
“You said you didn’t know where she was.””
“I didn’t.””
“Then why did Olivia say you would find her?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The detective leaned forward.
“Vanessa.””
Slowly, she looked up.
“I wasn’t hiding Olivia.””
“Then who was?””
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“My father.””
The room went cold.
“What?””
Vanessa whispered:
“He never accepted that Olivia was taken away from our family.””
I stared.
“But your father has been dead for years.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
She looked at me.
“He had people.””
The words sent a chill through me.
Detective Harris stood.
“Are you saying someone else has been protecting him?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I think so.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
This time, there was a photo.
A picture of Lily outside the police station.
My blood turned cold.
