Chapter 6: The Truth Behind The Smile
I drove to the police station with Lily sitting beside me.
She held her stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest.
The same rabbit she carried everywhere after her mother died.
I kept looking at her through the rearview mirror.
Every time she looked out the window, I wondered how long she had been carrying this fear alone.
How many times had she wanted to tell me?
How many times had Vanessa convinced her to stay silent?
When we arrived, an officer named Detective Harris met us.
She crouched down to Lily’s level.
“Hi, Lily. My name is Detective Harris.””
Lily nodded.
“Are you here because I did something wrong?””
The detective immediately shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“She asked that before we even started talking.””
My heart broke.
“She thinks she’s in trouble.””
Detective Harris sighed.
“That happens when children are pressured into silence.””
Vanessa was brought into another room.
I watched her through the glass.
She looked completely different from the woman I planned to marry.
The confident woman.
The charming woman.
The woman who convinced everyone she was perfect.
Detective Harris placed a folder on the table.
“We received a report from Rachel.””
I nodded.
“And?””
“We reviewed the information.””
She opened the folder.
“There are several complaints connected to Vanessa over the past few years.””
My jaw tightened.
“Why was nothing done?””
“Some reports did not contain enough evidence at the time.””
I looked down.
“But now?””
“Now there is a pattern.””
The word stayed in my mind.
Pattern.
Not one mistake.
Not one bad day.
A pattern.
Detective Harris looked at Lily.
“She wants to tell you something.””
I turned.
Lily looked nervous.
“What is it?””
She reached into her pocket.
This time, she pulled out a folded piece of paper.
My heart stopped.
“What is that?””
She looked down.
“Vanessa made me write it.””
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was shaky.
It was a list.
Rules.
Rule one: Do not talk about Mommy.
Rule two: Do not cry when Vanessa is around.
Rule three: Do not tell Daddy anything.
My hands started trembling.
At the bottom was one more sentence.
A sentence that made me feel sick.
“If Daddy leaves me because of you, it’s your fault.””
I closed my eyes.
Lily started crying.
“I thought you would leave me.””
I immediately pulled her into my arms.
“Never.””
“But she said…”
“I don’t care what she said.””
I held her tighter.
“You are my daughter. Nothing changes that.””
Across the room, Vanessa watched through the glass.
And for the first time…
She looked small.
Not because I felt sorry for her.
Because I finally saw the truth.
She had spent months trying to convince Lily she was powerless.
But Lily had done the bravest thing possible.
She told the truth.
Detective Harris walked back in.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She placed another envelope on the table.
“This was delivered to the station today.””
My name was written on the front.
I opened it slowly.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Rachel.
Not from Michael.
From Vanessa’s former fiancé.
Eric.
The first line made my blood run cold.
“Daniel, if you are reading this, she has already started doing to your daughter what she did to mine.””
I looked at Detective Harris.
“Where is Eric?””
Her expression changed.
“That’s the problem.””
“What problem?””
She looked toward Vanessa’s room.
“He disappeared three years ago.””
I stared at the letter.
Then I read the final sentence.
“She didn’t just ruin my family. She made sure nobody could ever find out what happened to Olivia.””
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
May you like
One sentence.
“Ask Vanessa why Olivia was never found.””
