Chapter 2: The Voice On The Phone

The room felt smaller as Vanessa’s voice echoed from the broken phone.

I stood completely still.

Lily stood behind me, holding onto my jacket.

Vanessa looked at the phone.

Then she looked at me.

“Daniel, turn that off.””

I didn’t move.

The recording continued.

Vanessa’s voice was unmistakable.

“Lily, you need to understand something.””

A younger-sounding Lily answered.

“Understand what?””

Vanessa sighed.

“You cannot keep talking about your mother.””

My hands tightened into fists.

On the recording, Lily’s tiny voice trembled.

“But Daddy said I can remember her.””

Vanessa responded immediately.

“Your father doesn’t know what’s best for you right now.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

The recording continued.

“You are going to have a new family soon,” Vanessa said.

“And new families don’t have room for old memories.””

Lily’s voice cracked.

“But Mommy was my family.””

A pause.

Then Vanessa said the words that made my stomach turn.

“She isn’t coming back. You need to stop pretending she is.””

I felt like someone had punched me.

I had spent three years trying to teach Lily that grief was normal.

That loving someone who was gone did not mean you were stuck in the past.

And Vanessa had been secretly trying to erase that.

“Daniel, listen to me,” Vanessa said.

I looked at her.

“No.””

Her face changed.

“Please.””

“No. I’m listening to what your voice says when you thought I would never hear it.””

The wedding music outside suddenly became louder.

People were laughing.

Taking pictures.

Celebrating a marriage that was falling apart behind a locked door.

I looked down at Lily.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because she said you would be angry.””

I swallowed hard.

“She told me you would choose her because she was going to be your wife.””

My heart broke.

“Lily…”

“She said if I ruined the wedding, you would send me away.””

I immediately pulled her into my arms.

“I would never send you away.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She misunderstood.””

I turned toward her.

“She understood enough to be afraid.””

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“You’re making me look like a monster because of one bad moment.””

“One moment?””

I pointed at the phone.

“How many recordings are there?””

She froze.

That was the first time I saw real fear on her face.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

Lily slowly stepped forward.

“There are more.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Lily.””

The way she said her name made my daughter immediately step back.

I moved between them.

“How many?””

Lily reached into her dress pocket again.

This time, she pulled out a small memory card.

“I saved them.””

I stared at my daughter.

“You saved them?””

She nodded.

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

Those words hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.

Because Lily was right.

I had trusted an adult over my own child.

Not because I didn’t love her.

Because I never imagined someone I loved could hurt her.

I took the memory card.

Vanessa suddenly moved forward.

“Give me that.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“Daniel, you don’t know what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

“No, you don’t.””

She lowered her voice.

“You’re about to destroy everything because of a child’s misunderstanding.””

Lily flinched.

I noticed.

And Vanessa noticed that I noticed.

The confidence disappeared from her face.

I walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?””

I stopped.

“To find out how long this has been happening.””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, please.””

I looked at her hand.

She released me.

For the first time since I met her, I saw her without the perfect smile.

Without the perfect dress.

Without the perfect image.

Just fear.

“You need to tell me something,” I said.

“What?””

“Why did you need Lily to forget her mother?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The silence told me more than words could.

Then my phone rang.

It was my brother, Michael.

I answered.

“Daniel?””

His voice sounded serious.

“What happened?””

I looked toward Lily.

“I just found something out.””

There was a pause.

Then Michael said something that made my blood freeze.

“Daniel… before you marry Vanessa, there’s something you need to know about her past.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was watching me.

Terrified.

“What past?””

Michael took a deep breath.

“The reason she left her last relationship.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Why?””

May you like

His next words changed everything.

“Because she was accused of doing the same thing to another child.””
