Chapter 3: The Name Hidden In The Papers

I did not move.

I could hear the distant sounds of the wedding preparations downstairs.

People laughing.

Flowers being delivered.

Someone testing music in the garden.

The entire world was moving forward while my life had suddenly stopped.

“What does this mean?””

My voice barely came out.

Terrell sat beside me.

“I wanted to explain.””

“Explain what?””

I lifted the paper.

“Why is your mother’s name here?””

He looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not afraid.

Exhausted.

“Because my grandfather knew her.””

I stared.

“That doesn’t answer anything.””

Terrell rubbed his forehead.

“When my grandfather wrote the agreement, he knew Mama had been managing the property.””

“Managing?””

“Yes.””

“Not owning?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

The room felt smaller.

“So she lied?””

Terrell looked toward the closed door.

“She believed she deserved it.””

I looked at the stain on my gown again.

All morning I had thought Delphine hated me.

But maybe this was bigger.

Maybe I was just standing in the way of something she wanted.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Terrell’s eyes met mine.

“Because I was afraid.””

That surprised me.

“Of me?””

“No.””

He looked down.

“Of losing you.””

The answer softened me for half a second.

Then I remembered the morning.

The wine.

The humiliation.

The way his mother had looked at me.

“Terrell, your mother tried to ruin my wedding dress.””

“I know.””

“How long have you known she was capable of something like this?””

He was quiet.

Too quiet.

That was my answer.

“You suspected.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“Then why did you let me walk into this?””

“I didn’t know what she would do.””

I stood.

“You knew enough.””

Terrell followed.

“I was trying to handle it.””

“But I was the one standing there.””

My voice cracked.

“I was the one holding my ruined dress.””

He looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Those words mattered.

But they did not erase what happened.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, guests were beginning to arrive.

They had no idea what was happening upstairs.

They thought this was just another beautiful wedding morning.

They thought I was a happy bride.

Terrell came beside me.

“There’s more.””

I closed my eyes.

“What now?””

“The transfer isn’t the only reason she wanted to stop the appointment.””

I turned.

“What else?””

He hesitated.

Then he said,

“She was afraid the attorney would show you the second document.””

My heart sank.

“What second document?””

Terrell reached into the folder.

He pulled out another page.

“This.””

I looked down.

The words were clear.

The signature at the bottom was familiar.

I had seen it before.

Many times.

My hands went numb.

“Terrell…”

He watched my reaction.

“You recognize it?””

I slowly nodded.

Because I did.

That signature belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had promised me they would always protect me.

Someone who had stood beside me during the hardest years of my life.

I looked up at Terrell.

“Why does my father’s signature appear on a document connected to your family?””

Terrell’s face changed.

And before he could answer, his phone started ringing.

He looked at the screen.

Then his expression turned serious.

“Who is it?””

He did not answer.

He just stared.

“Terrell?””

Slowly, he handed me the phone.

The caller’s name was displayed.

And the person calling was the last person I expected to hear from on my wedding day.
