Chapter 14: The Last Secret

The ceremony stopped.

Nobody moved.

Delphine walked slowly toward me.

Terrell immediately stepped beside me.

But I raised my hand.

“No.””

He looked at me.

I shook my head.

“I want to hear her.””

Delphine stopped.

For years, she had controlled every conversation.

Every room.

Every decision.

But now everyone was listening to me.

Not her.

“What truth do you have left?””

I asked.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Your mother.””

The name alone changed the atmosphere.

“My mother?””

Delphine nodded.

“She knew everything.””

I waited.

“She knew Marcus would eventually choose fear over honesty.””

My father looked down.

“She knew I would fight for the property.””

I stared at her.

“And?””

Delphine took a breath.

“She also knew I was not the only person who wanted control.””

Everyone looked confused.

She turned toward my father.

“Tell her.””

My father went pale.

“Delphine.””

“Tell her what happened the night before her mother died.””

The world seemed to stop.

I looked at my father.

“Dad?””

He could barely look at me.

“What is she talking about?””

He whispered,

“I made a promise to your mother.””

“What promise?””

“That I would protect you.””

I waited.

“But after she died…”

His voice broke.

“I failed.””

I stepped closer.

“Why?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because I blamed the Vance family.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I thought they caused the problems your mother had.””

He looked at Delphine.

“I was wrong.””

The truth came out slowly.

Painfully.

“My anger made me sign things I should never have signed.””

I felt tears in my eyes.

“So you gave away her rights because you were angry?””

“Yes.””

“And you hid it because you were ashamed?””

“Yes.””

I looked at everyone.

All these years.

All these secrets.

And the answer was not one evil person.

It was people making choices and being too afraid to admit them.

Delphine looked at me.

“Your father made the first mistake.””

My father nodded.

“He did.””

Everyone looked at him.

“But I made the bigger one.””

His words surprised me.

“What do you mean?””

He stepped forward.

“I let Delphine convince me that keeping you away from this was protection.””

He looked at me.

“But it was selfish.””

The garden was silent.

I did not know what to say.

Because for years, I had wanted someone to admit they hurt me.

And now they finally had.

But the pain did not disappear.

It simply became something I could understand.

Terrell took my hand.

The officiant waited quietly.

The guests waited.

The whole world waited.

I looked at the stained wedding gown.

The ruined morning.

The secrets.

The betrayal.

Then I looked at Terrell.

“Do you still want to do this?””

His eyes filled.

“More than anything.””

I smiled.

“Then let’s finish what we started.””

The ceremony continued.

No interruption.

No more secrets.

When we exchanged vows, I meant every word.

When Terrell said my name, I believed him.

And when we finally said yes, something changed.

Not because of a house.

Not because of an agreement.

Because for the first time in my life, I had chosen something without anyone choosing for me.

After the ceremony, Harold approached.

He handed me the final envelope.

The one from my mother.

“You can open it now.””

I held it carefully.

Inside was one final letter.

I unfolded it.

My mother’s handwriting filled the page.

My Jasmine,

If you are reading this, you have already learned the truth.

But there is one thing I need you to know.

I continued reading.

And the final sentence made me cry.

May you like

The greatest inheritance I could leave you was not a house.

It was the courage to choose your own life.
